Some cable news stations are reporting 9 victims, while others are claiming 11.

As with most breaking news stories, the reason for the accident is being blamed on a mine bump, another says a collapse, and yet another says there may have been gas in the mine.

It will eventually sort out.

What a horrible thing to happen to rescuers.

mountain bump, smaller than the first eq that occurred on the 6th. The concussion killed & buried under tons of rock & coal, the first 6 miners.

I think the feds will now close this mine. They want control over all forms of energy. They will set up, through the earth antenna in that mine.

I hope Murray wasn't injured, or suffered heart failure due to this. He was very out spoken against what the government wants to do to the coal mining industry.

keep us posted OP.

Only one dead would almost be a blessing. But those poor six still trapped, if still alive... it's fading for them too, they'll never get in there to get em out.

waiting for an update from MSHA about closing the mine. Of course that will effect energy prices this winter.

Crandall Canyon Mine hauls out about 3,500,000 tons per year
[link to www.ogm.utah.gov]

According to the latest coal report prepared by the UGS, the Crandall Canyon Mine was scheduled to close next year. Longwall mining equipment used in the Crandall Canyon Mine already had been sent to another mine near Helper.
Genwal Resources operates the mine. It is owned by UtahAmerican Energy, which is owned by Murray Energy Corp. The company has not disclosed its plans for the mine.

At its peak, the UGS said, the Crandall Canyon Mine was a huge operation, mining as much as 3.5 million tons of coal per year. State officials now say the mine has gone from "longwall mining," to "room and pillar mining," which does not harvest as much coal as fast.

"They're just cleaning up the remaining resources in that area," Tabet said.

The UGS 2006 coal production report said the Crandall Canyon Mine had produced about 613,000 short tons of coal and was projected to mine about 625,000 short tons in 2007. Genwal Resources estimated its reserves at nearly 11.3 million tons of coal.

even a micro quake in a mine at that depth would be amplified since they are so close to the epicenter. Plus the acoustics ( sound wave) force generated from a micro quake alone would cause trauma.

miners call a microquake, or small quake a mountain bump. People on the surface, or outside the mine entrance won't feel or hear anything. However those deep underground will!

Interesting editorial here.

snip:
Coals Dark Future

Bob Murray,
“Without the coal industry to manufacture our electricity, our products will not compete in the global marketplace against foreign countries,” he said. “People on fixed incomes will not be able to pay their electric bills.”

Murray, who once called Al Gore “the shaman of global goofiness,” went on to predict the demise of the coal industry if Congress passed any legislation related to global warming.

It wasn’t the time or the place for such lobbying, especially for Murray, a frequent visitor to Capitol Hill. But he is right that America faces hard choices about the future of coal, so abundant but so environmentally troublesome.

Congress wisely beat back a proposal to convert coal to liquid fuel to power cars, trucks and airplanes. That process makes little sense from an energy or pollution standpoint.

It is a blessing that mine deaths in the United States are rare, contrasted to those in countries like China, where 1,792 workers have died so far this year, according to government figures. Chinese labor leaders put fatalities much higher — up to 20,000 in 2006, instead of the official government tally of 4,746 last year.

China’s scramble for coal and the continuing quest in the United States reflect the rising worldwide demand for fuel to generate electricity. Coal fires about half of U.S. power plants. It’s the cheapest fuel, but the dirtiest in terms of air pollution, and one of the most damaging to extract from the land. Scientists say burning coal also contributes to global warming.

this is why we have been hearing so much in the media about missing pregnant women, children, mountain hikers, ect. Oh they have been milking this story since the 6th. Just to push the idea, more and more. If they were chipped, electronically tracked, the rescue workers would have found them on the first day, instead of costing thousands of dollars in rescue efforts, putting the rescue workers at risk of injury & death.

Chip people, and track them to keep them "safe", and allow rescue workers, to find them faster.
