This city sits near the land called the Black Swamp (the Indian name for all of this area) Over a 100 plus years ago the town of Findlay re routed the Blanchard River. As the city grew this caused problems. The river cant be dredged due to bedrock.Bowling Green, and other locations near here, where the last places developed in Ohio, cause it was a swamp. Natural gas is how Findlay got its start. In the early stages of development Dutch engineers came over...but they couldnt help.Lay of the land and other problems could not be fixed.So...to make a long story short if you live or build in a location that is designated as a flood plain(even if the goverment says it only floods every 100 years)dont believe it...try every 30 years or so. |
