A publication from 2011 [5] links the evolution and spread of viral infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, influenzas, SARS, Ebola, Swine Flu, Bird Flu) to areas where soil selenium levels are lower. A map in the article overlays areas of soil selenium deficiency with the origin of new viruses. Countries like China, where selenium-deficient soil is widespread and city populations number in the millions, are most susceptible to viral evolution and spread. ... Selenium from our diet replaces a sulfur atom in the amino acid cysteine to form selenocysteine, which is then incorporated into selenoproteins. There are 25 known selenoproteins, with most of them exhibiting antioxidant properties such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Viruses produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are combated by GPx and other selenoproteins to slow down viral replication and mutations [1,2]. |

Just titrate up slowly with the iodine so you don’t get a Herxheimer reaction (which is basically where your body is now killing off too many nasties at once and it makes you sick). I’m a big believer in iodine personally. Also, make sure that the iodine is the kind you can take internally...not pretty if it’s not. |

IODINE - IODIDE [link to www.differencebetween.com (secure)] Iodine and iodide are closely related terms because iodide is derived from iodine. Therefore, most of the times, we use these two terms interchangeably, which is wrong. Iodine is also prevalent in oriental diet (rice wrapped in SEA WEED) where there is almost NO prostate cancer. It is believed that higher doses of iodine in your diet will prevent cancer of the prostate - you know - providing you HAVE a prostate. |

A normally harmless (or low-pathogenic) virus can become much more destructive (virulent) in a person who is selenium deficient." ... A lack of selenium causes a decrease in the production of selenium dependent proteins that keep viruses under control. This is serious and can result in worse outcomes for people infected with many types of nasty viruses including hepatitis A and B viruses, Ebola, polio, AIDS, influenza and the human papilloma virus (which causes cervical and oral cancer). Persons with AIDS have a higher requirement for selenium and unless they supplement with it there will be a steady decline in their blood levels of selenium. This is probably because the immune system uses up the selenium more rapidly to help it fight the AIDS virus. Studies have shown that patients with AIDS who experience more rapid drops in their blood selenium levels do not do as well as those who don’t – the rapid loss of selenium results in a greater chance of developing full blown AIDS and dying from it." Great catch OP. I have studied supplementation (vitamins) extensively while dealing with my stage 5 kidney disease, most are completely useless, I have found some things that do work, Baking soda(sodium bicarbonate)is a MUST for anyone with kidney disease. I found this awhile back, a great scientific study, it meets all the requirements for a good study "randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 1,312 participants with a follow-up of 7.7 years. Some results: "evidence from randomized controlled trials suggests that selenium supplementation may prevent viral load progression and increase immune cell count in HIV-positive patients" Great news, BUT "selenium supplementation significantly increased the risk for type 2 diabetes in participants" Its a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation! Agree...iodine evaporates, so having it added in salt or in tablet form is not optimal. One of the best forms of iodine is Lugol’s iodine 5% drops by J Crow, order from them...amazon does not carry this strength. From OP’s first link: When virus enters a human lacking selenium, it can undergo mutations making it far more dangerous. In other words, virus also needs selenium as a protection against free radicals. If the virus lacks selenium, mutations can occur making it even more dangerous. WonderlandAlice User ID: 73898431 United States 03/04/2020 01:26 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks, OP! Very interesting! I've been taking selenium with my nascent iodine for a while now. Ironically, I read selenium can increase your risk for diabetes this weekend, got kinda scared, and stopped adding it to my daily vitamin regimen this week. After reading your post, maybe I'll add it back. No real concerns about diabetes anyway (other than my hypochondria, ha!). Astragalus root is something else I take that is supposed to be anti-viral. Thought I'd mention it. Every little deterrent against coronavirus helps, right? My first line of defense is really prayer, however. Everything else is extra.
