Fears of cholera pandemic grow in Iraq - 4000 suspected cases
BAGHDAD, Aug. 30 -- Fears of a cholera outbreak are growing in northern Iraq after dozens of cases were detected in two northern provinces, a medical source said on Thursday.

"Cholera and diarrhea are spreading in the provinces Sulaimaniyah and Kirkuk after tests in the provincial hospitals' laboratories confirmed the cases," the source from Kirkuk public hospital told Xinhua by telephone.

The hospitals also sent the samples to Baghdad's laboratories for more confirmation, he said.

Last week, Zeryan Uthman, minister of health in the regional Kurdish government in northern Iraq, said in a news conference that 35 cases were found to be infected with cholera in the Sulaimaniyah province, 330 km northeast of Baghdad, and 47 more cases were detected in Kirkuk, some 250 km north of the capital.

Uthman said that 4000 more suspected cases are probably infected by the disease as they are suffering from diarrhea which is one of the cholera's symptoms.

He called on the World Health Organization (WHO) and both the regional Kurdish and Iraqi central governments to exert every efforts to control the spread of the disease to other areas.

Re: Fears of cholera pandemic grow in Iraq - 4000 suspected cases
Aug. 30 -- Eight Iraqis died and more than 4,000 have contracted cholera due to an outbreak in two northern Iraqi provinces, local authorities reported on Thursday.

"There are 47 cholera cases in Kirkuk and 35 in Sulaimaniyah. This is in addition to 2,250 people suffering from diarrhea in Sulaimaniyah and 2,000 similar cases in Kirkuk," regional Health Minister Zeryan Othman said.

The outbreak has hit the Sulaimaniya province and the nearby Kirkuk region in northern Iraq.

"Although the outbreak is largely affecting adults, children are at extremely high risk," UNICEF said.

Cholera is a gastrointestinal disease, spread by drinking contaminated water and can cause severe diarrhea. In extreme cases, it may lead to fatal dehydration.

The outbreak is being attributed to "serious problems with water quality and sewage treatment" -- an assessment repeated by the U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq.

Only 30 percent of the population in Sulaimaniya has an adequate water supply, according to local reports, and "many people have been reduced to digging shallow wells outside their own homes," UNICEF said.

Many Iraq's infrastructure in many towns and villages collapsed due to years of war since the 2003 U.S. invasion.

Jewish successes in the world are completely contingent upon the failure of all other peoples. Only when the gentiles face total catastrophe do the Jews experience good fortune.

Cholera spreads in Iraq as health services collapse

Lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation has led to 5,000 people in northern Iraq contracting cholera.

The outbreak is among the most serious signs yet that Iraqi health and social services are breaking down as the number of those living in camps and poor housing increases after people flee their homes.

"The disease is spreading very fast," Dr Juan Abdallah, a senior official in Kurdistan's health ministry, told a UN agency. "It is the first outbreak of its kind here in the past few decades."

Doctors in Sulaimaiyah in Iraqi Kurdistan have appealed for help because of the rapidly increasing number of cases, saying there is a shortage of medicines. Although the city has been less affected by fighting than almost anywhere in Iraq, Unicef says that mains water is only available for two hours a day and many people have dug shallow wells outside their homes.

"There is a shortage of medicines to control the disease and the focal point [the source of the disease] hasn't been identified yet," Dr Dirar Iyad of Sulaimaniyah General Hospital told the UN news agency Irin. Ten people have already died and he expects more deaths to occur "over the next couple of days as victims are already in an advanced stage of illness."
