The Vatican is watching the skies because they know the prophecies. Wormwood will come and great devastation will follow. When they see it coming, it will give them time to run to their caverns underground. The sixth seal opens as meteors bombard the earth:

Rev. 6:15 And the kings of the earth and the princes and the tribunes and the rich and the strong and every bondman and freeman hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of mountains.

They believe that Jesus IS. "Even the devils believe and tremble." They and their lackeys will be running for cover, but it won't save them.
