tonight april 23 2011 my wife having a smoke on the deck started yelling at me to come outside and see this bright star that was moving up into the clear bright sky. Watching a movie I was, I paused to see the end of the movie while she says that I missed seeing this miraculous giant five or six pointed star move at extremely fast speed up into the sky then disappearing. she said she watched it for twenty to thirty seconds it being motionless at first then moving rapidly up then gone.

The star I see is in the east but it is NOT before sunrise. It is 12:38am right now and it is about at the 10 o'clock position (12 being straight up) and due east. That cannot be Venus as Venus rises prior to dawn.

The brightest thing in the eastern sky at that time is Jupiter. Also, Venus doesn't rise prior to the Sun at this time of year. It rises after and can't be seen over the Sun's glare. It won't rise before the Sun again until June of 2012.

how did it get from bright to brighted ???

I noticed a very bright star in the SE part of the sky this time last year around July to January in KY I watched it the whole time and when I searched for answers on the internet for what it was astronomers were saying everythig from Jupiter to Venus to Mars. Now its back the same time of year and it 3 times as bright in the eastern sky.

Download the Stellarium (free planetarium program) [link to www.stellarium.org] and you can find out exactly what it is. Sounds like you're seeing Jupiter.

Exactly, I have been watching the sky for years and years. 58 years old and have never seen anything like it in the sky. I have been watching now for a couple of years and it is getting brighter or closer.

I am seeing it now at 11:47 pm from Oxnard, South of Santa Barbara California.

It is very bright and it ain't dawn yet!!! It is high in the eastern sky.

I'll repeat the advice given over and over (and over) again in these "things in the sky" threads - please download a sky map program or use an online one to check what's supposed to be visible.

It'll tell you that from California, around midnight, Jupiter is high in the eastern sky. Simples!!

i'm in ontario canada and I have been watching this object since the start of summer.look to the east at 1:30 a.m. there is no such thing as global warming. all planets in our solar system are heating up and my car exhaust is not causing pluto to change color and shift its ice sheets.global warming also does not cause all the earthquakes and volcanos we are experiencing.do your homework look at the mother shipton prophesy and you will see it coincides with revelation in the bible.where do you think the myth of the dragon comes from. a fiery comet or planet with a debris tail comes near our planet and pounds us with a meteor shower.hence the "dragon with its tail"comes by and "hurls fire balls at us".thats why all the old cultures worshipped the dragon or snake because they feared it and didn't want it to come back and destroy them.99% of people don't know anyhting except what they want you to believe.be wise and godspeed

Yep, it's JUPITER. And it's damn bright! Even with regular binoculars,
you can see some of his moons lined up. Really spectacular!

I have seen it and after a bit it starts to fade and shoots off to the west and down. L live on the east coast of New Zealand and its lovely to watch. Gone by 7p.m.

Ok after seeing this thing for a couple of years, here's what I know , I live in Alberta ,Canada . I have no wish to join a "side" of a debate, or be easily swept under a rug as amateur, or be a religious ,and/or join crazy conspirators. After checking star maps here's what I know, it rises here in the east aprox. 11pm and climbs straight up to eventually move westward and set. When I saw it at 12 it was beside capella an hour later it was near Algol , I can find Jupiter But this is not Jupiter , does someone know what this is? I am looking for honest answer not bs from nay Sayers or alien abduction addicts, just people with intellegence and better equipment than I possess.

Interesting take on it, if not a little cryptic, at least it seems intellegent ,I will read up on that.

I have seen this a few time over the past 10 days,i live in the middle of England (Leicester) and it has always been to the left of the moon.Last night 10-30ish i got my google sky app on my phone and it was lined up with jupiter but this thing was very very bright and seemed quite low in the sky

It may very well be Jupiter, but like you said it is very bright, and from what I have seen it is not quit lined up, off by 7-10 degrees.
