HUGE BRIGHT STAR IN THE EASTERN SKY!

It is Jupiter. I noticed it as well. It is bright. I had to look it up on line.

Actually that is the star Sirius. During this time of the year it will rise in the east and slowly rise further south each day. It is actually much larger than our sun, but many lightyears further away.

I watch the stars off and on, had to stop when I became obsessed with Venus. Now the past few weeks, I see this really bright star in the East starting around 8 pm or so (I'm in the Los Angeles area). Ok, so I google "unusually bright star in the eastern sky" and got this thread. When I became obsessed with the super brightness of what I was to learn was "Venus," it was in the WESTERN sky, visible from sunset until around 10 pm. That was 2010 and I observed it from around January through August and finally had to quit watching when I started preparing to move. So now it has shifted to the EASTERN sky? My question: is this the normal pattern of Venus? Last year Western sky from sunset to around 10 pm, this year Eastern sky from around 8 pm to ??? (not sure when it disappears because I can't stay up to watch) Or is it always in the Eastern sky during September from 8 pm to ???

This thing is brighter than I even remember it was last year. Absolutely beautiful though.

This is not a planet,I have an orion telescope and have been watching this thing for about 3 years now. I will be frank with you,what I have seen so far.For one thing over the past 3 years it has been getting brighter and closer. It's close enough now that I can see 3 planets orbiting this star.Thats right,A STAR! If you have not put a scope on it then dont reply. Those of us that have, know what we are seeing.I say again this is a STAR!!!!! with orbiting planets NOT VENUS since Venus has no MOONS I strongly suggest who ever reads this ,PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS THING THIS THING GIVE ALL US LOOKERS THE CREEPS. Face the truth or dont its your choice!!

I believe you my friend! Native American Indians and Canadian Aboriginal Medicine Wheels (spiritual artifact) have four colors which is red, black, white, and yellow. Google: Hermas faces the beast vision 4. The beast has the four colors upon it's head which is red, black, white, and gold.

Later, Hermas hears a strange noise and fears it's the beast coming to get him, and then the lady in white disappears from his sight.. Engines igniting?.. The beast roaring?... Is the lady a spiritual manifestation, a hologram, or did she teleport onto the ship? Scotty beam me up?

According to Astronomy Magazine, it's Jupiter and the orbiting "planets" are 4 of Jupiter's moons. It's really impressive.

Ok I've just read 8 pages of some of the most rediculous post ever with no real explanation as to what the star/planet in the east that rises at dusk. Its not venus since venus rises in the southwest at dusk with neptune. jupiter rises in the southeast and is easily identifiable. mercury doesn't rise until just before sunrise. mars rises around 10pm. saturn approximately 2am. Now there is a star or planet that i have seen from the first week of May to now the first week of Jan. that is 9 months. i have been searching for answers all this time. i've even e-mailed nasa directly with the response that nothing in the eastern sky is visable like what i'm describing. even though on any clear day for 9 months now me any family members or neighbors or friends have easily seen this. none of us have gotten any answers have found anything to tell us what it is or could be. its not any known planet or star. It was visable at 4:45pm last night just before dusk well above the horizon in the eastern sky. I live in central minnesota. back in may it was just breaking horizon at 9pm in the east. it clearly seems to be distancing itself closer as does other planetary objects like mars or mercury. but this one i have no explanation for it.

Planets wander about against the star background.

Actually everything in the cosmos changes its place all the time. Including the Earth.
With the planets its just noticeable because they are so close.

A ten second check on a star map / planetarium program will tell you that's Jupiter...

Oh, and if you think it isn't Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Sirius, Capella, or any other known bright object, then please tell us exactly where it is in the sky - i.e. which constellation it's in, its bearing and altitude at a specific time, or something that can locate it exactly. "Above the horizon in the east around 4:45" isn't accurate...

as I've said its not jupiter, even if i looked for ten seconds at a star map it wouldn't change the fact that jupiter is in the south and much larger and i can easily point it out and see it on clear nights. please i'm not trying to get silly answers i've listed where all the planets are in my previous post with times of when they rise. it is an unknown. and its not venus either. continued responses won't change that. once i can identify the closest star cluster it rises next to i will post, i don't know all the star clusters names by memory....

OP, I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, where we have 300+ days of clear skies every year. I have been an amateur astronomer for 40 years. I watch the comings and goings of the moon and planets year after year. Jupiter is the only object that even roughly corresponds to what you are describing.

If it is really this important to you, please print some star charts and plot the position of the object over a few weeks. Then you will have something to work with.

east is jupiter. Its 10-20 times larger to the naked eye than it was 40 years ago. Its core may be imploding, but we don't know.
venus is to the west, at night.

No, Jupiter is behaving normally, and is no brighter than expected for its current opposition. There is no evidence of any change, and certainly not of its "core imploding" whatever that might mean (it doesn't even make scientific sense).

If you're claiming it's brighter, then I'm sure you can produce the measurements you've made to show this. I'm afraid I don't work on "beliefs", only empirical data...
