I don't know. I knew Hunter from the early days, I "worked" on his campaign when he ran for sheriff of Pitkin Co.
He went downhill fast at the end. There is a last interview with Charlie Rose out there that you'd rather not see, Hunter bloated and looks like a stoke victim. HST was VERY ill at the end of his life. I think he just threw in the towel with his powers on the wane ala Hemingway.
