If a US state tried to secede
As can be seen [link to news.yahoo.com]

the idea of a US state seceding is on some people's agenda.

If a small state like Vermont actually seceded (for racial, ethnic, political, nationalistic, economic, lack of perceived leadership from Washington, hatred of the Federal government, ideological, environmental, military etc reasons, or even out of outright boredom, contrariness, peevishness, stupidity, malice or "just for fun" reasons!), together with the full backing of its police and Vermont National Guard, what would Washington do?

And if several small states seceded simultaneously? Or one or more big ones like Texas and California?

How would the action/inaction of a President Bush, Cheney, Giuliani, Obama, Hillary or Paul to a secessionist state differ?

Re: If a US state tried to secede
Well, if it's a repubican state like Texas -my first reaction would be "ADIOS - mother****ers!"

But if it were CA or NY or anyplace else that wasn't consumed by wholesale greed and spent their lives trying to tell others how to live - or so filled with the religious right that the main state sport was hating anyone who thought or acted differently than their percieved "normals" - then I might be upset by the loss.

Of course if it were CA, then the US FEDS would no doubt step in. We have well over ten percent of the US GNP produced right here in the land of Oranges and Sunshine and smog and mexican illegals... And as such we contribute slightly over 17% of all Federal Income Taxs paid for the nation as a whole. I doubt they'd let us leave easily - although I can think of several good reasons to suport out doing so!

So for whatever HORRENDOUS problems California is facing and there are PLENTY OF THEM, there is also one hell of a productive streak running through us, too. One way or anohter, there is still gold in these hills. Whether we dig it out of the ground or it pops up in the Inland Empire that feeds the country - or it comes via the creativity in Silicone Valley - it doesn't matter. It's still golden! And still taxable! <damn it!>

Re: If a US state tried to secede
The Federal Government no doubt has contingency plans for just this kind of occurrence.

These plans probably involve something akin to blitzkrieg, and use of chemical and biological weaponry.

No-one should seriously even imagine that any US state could possibly secede.

We tried it in the 1860's. Didn't work out too well.

Well, since no state is going to secede, you might as well say that the Feds will drop a few nukes and cut off ESPN, and you'll be equally correct.

It didn't work because the Feds spun the history of that time. They called it a "Civil War" which it was not. They acted like a bunch of Yahoos grabbed some guns and started rebelling. Every state held elections in their state leglistatures so everything was done legally.

If we are truly free then there would be no question a state could leave the Union without a problem.

If the feds do not want states to leave the Union then at a minumum there should be a Constitutional Convention. All states should meet to get a new contract with the Feds since the Federal Government made the previous contract via the Constitution null and void since they themselves say the Constitution no longer matters. The Constitution is the only thing that legally held the Union together, so by their own llaws the Union no longer exists.
