An Open Letter to the Ron Paul Faithful
Topics:Economy (U.S.) | Economy (Global) | Economics | Politics & Government | White House
Editor's Note:

Dear folks,

You guys are good. Real good. You are truly a force on World Wide Web and I tip my hat to you.

That's based on my first hand experience of your work regarding our CNBC Republican candidate debate. After the debate, we put up a poll on our Web site asking who readers thought won the debate. You guys flooded it.

Now these Internet polls are admittedly unscientific and subject to hacking. In the end, they are really just a way to engage the reader and take a quick temperature reading of your audience. Nothing more and nothing less. The cyber equivalent of asking the room for a show of hands on a certain question.

So there was our after-debate poll. The numbers grew ... 7,000-plus votes after a couple of hours ... and Ron Paul was at 75%.

Now Paul is a fine gentleman with some substantial backing and, by the way, was a dynamic presence throughout the debate , but I haven't seen him pull those kind of numbers in any "legit" poll. Our poll was either hacked or the target of a campaign. So we took the poll down.

The next day, our email basket was flooded with Ron Paul support messages. And the computer logs showed the poll had been hit with traffic from Ron Paul chat sites. I learned other Internet polls that night had been hit in similar fashion. Congratulations. You folks are obviously well-organized and feel strongly about your candidate and I can't help but admire that.

But you also ruined the purpose of the poll. It was no longer an honest "show of hands" -- it suddenly was a platform for beating the Ron Paul drum. That certainly wasn't our intention and certainly doesn't serve our readers ... at least those who aren't already in the Ron Paul camp.

Some of you Ron Paul fans take issue with my decision to take the poll down. Fine. When a well-organized and committed "few" can throw the results of a system meant to reflect the sentiments of "the many," I get a little worried. I'd take it down again.

Sincerely,

Allen Wastler

Be careful what you wish for, pal.

Rudy loves putting people in prison. He supported a boom in the prison construction in upstate New York. He wants pretty much wants everything against the law and will incarcerate as many people as he can.

Hillary is a Marxist nanny state politician who will turn the country itself into a minimum security prison. But of coarse it's all for your own good and of coarse it's all for the children. And just like Rudy she wants tons of laws and will fill the prisons also with people who committed "hate speech" and things like that.

Wastler's letter is a fine example of what Ron Paul is about. Even he could not find anything negative to say and admonnishing the overtaxed oppressed only adds fuel to the rEVOLution! Gotta love it!

"Paul is a fine gentleman" have you ever heard that before from opposition?

"with some substantial backing" "Ron Paul was at 75%" The People made their voice heard, loud and clear!

"was a dynamic presence throughout the debate" Its easier to speak the truth than to remember the lies.

"You folks are obviously well organized and feel strongly about your candidate and I cant help but admire that." Thank you!

If you think one man (RP) is going too change anything, then you are sadly mistaken.. And if he even begins to change things, then he will be taken out.

Its time to stop putting responsibility in one person other than yourself! The ONLY way things are going too change is by overhauling the system itself.. because evidently its a failed experiment.

This guy wants an honest show of hands? He has the nerve to talk about honesty? They stuck R.P. at the end of the line with poor lighting. they put thompson in the middle, who has just entered the race and whose only support seems to come from his wife and the most radical of christian right because he says he is against abortion.
Then, Maria asks Thompson about the dollar!!! Poor guy looks down on his sheet as if to find an answer and proceeds to ramble on incoherently. He is clueless about the dollar. Paul, on the other hand, is an expert on monetary policy. They gave him about 4 minutes out of 2 hours. Now who, Mr. Wastler is being dishonest?
I am writing that SOB right.

Re: CNBC admits they pulled post-debate poll because of RP!!! HA!!
I don't think CNBC is scared; I think they can't come to terms with the rEVOLution, but it's not some "sinister plot".

I certainly participate in the online polls and I vote for Dr. Paul, but I only do it once. If the mainstream people really believe that RP supporters are flooding the polls, then they're right in assuming that the polls are being skewed by the "vote early, vote often" approach -- if that's what is happening. I'm not convinced that it is, but then, I'm not a mainsteam media controller.

The only way we can see the depth of RP support is to wait for the poll where people can only vote once and really are forced take the time to do so: the primary elections.

If RP gets, say, ten percent of Iowa and 20 percent of New hampshire, it'll certainly shut up the skeptics.

But, until then, I can see why Murdoch et. al. are buying into the "astroturf" campaign idea, even though I don't agree with them.

Can you capture the IP address of the machine when someone votes online? Just wondering. If you can then you could just not count any other votes from that address. Or is that too simple and not realistic?

I only voted once also.

Don't know if they will count our votes in the primary either.

My letter to him:

Mr. Wastler,

Your comments in your open letter (found here: [link to www.cnbc.com] ) to "the Ron Paul faithful" are AMAZING! Not only are you being 100% biased in your views, but you're also misleading anyone who might have seen that poll and its outstanding results.

Some of your comments:
"You are truly a force on World Wide Web and I tip my hat to you."
"You guys flooded it."
"I haven't seen him pull those kind of numbers in any 'legit' poll."
"But you also ruined the purpose of the poll."
"When a well-organized and committed "few" can throw the results of a system meant to reflect the sentiments of "the many," I get a little worried."
"I'd take it down again."
You are the managing editor of a major news outlet, CNBC.com. The fact that you practice bias and convenient censorship is astounding. You have a responsibility to report the truth, as it happens. During your "legit" poll, you witnessed the overwhelming support that Ron Paul generates for his cause. But this "worries" you? Democracy in action "worries" you?

Now, I'd like to turn your attention to your organization's (CNBC's) October 9th, 2007 Republican debate. Ron Paul received the least time of all the candidates to speak. He received 5.8% of the time available to speak, compared to Mitt Romney's time, which was four times as much. (see here: [link to www.transworld...] ).

Mr. Wastler, I work for a bank. We have CNBC on our trading floor television all day. But not anymore. And not just because Ron Paul doesn't get a fair chance from your group to get his message across. If you're practicing bias, deceit, and censorship regarding that candidate, what else might CNBC be misinforming the public about? It's ok. We just switched to Bloomberg TV, and it's full of much more useful information.

Please, in the future, allow the political process to happen on its own. The great democracy that is the United States does NOT need the intervention from a lone managing editor who disagrees with a group of people. Your view that a "few" people are able to skew a poll is skewed in itself. Tell me, how do the "few" donate so much money to Ron Paul, knowing that the average donation is so very small?

You seem pretty smart SHR about computer stuff, so how would you go about to prove that all these votes are proxy based if you worked for NBC? Then after you throw out all the proxy votes you could count the rest couldn't you? I mean there is a way to determine if these are proxy votes ,right?

Perhaps some of the frothing at the mouth people DID flood the poll.. but why not analyze the amount of applause at the debate?

Who received the most applause? Ron Paul.

Who had the least amount of time to talk and was heckled by his own party? Ron Paul.

Who had the most split screens during his answers? Ron Paul.

All I can say is.. Keep on keeping on. When the primaries roll around, there will be a different headline concerning Ron Paul.

BTW, SHR is right.. try to keep the moonbatism to a minimum.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ---C.S. I am amused with the posters that resort to cussing and name-calling of Dr Paul's supporters as this only lends strength to the movement. You forget, Dr Paul's supporters are VERY ORGANIZED and ADMIRED - as stated by CNBC.

WE are under a different set of circumstances than past fraudulent Presidential elections. The powers that were dont care what we think - the least being our armed service personnel fighting their war for oil. LET'S MATCH WHAT THEY'RE REALLY FIGHTING FOR - HERE - ON AMERICAN SOIL!

What is insane about fighting for freedom? This will be a time when our children and those not yet born will remember in the year 2008 - WE THE PEOPLE - stood their ground and won their country back!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 309381

First of all going through and isolating and removing all the multiple votes sent by deleting cookies and or tracing down swarms of proxies and rotating IP addresses would be a ponderous pain in the ass, it would also most likely result in more screaming since all of a sudden RP's vote count would go down if it were true, it's a no win so chuck the poll, it's easier and results in less fuss in the long run.

My overall message is exactly what Sin said, "Try and keep the moonbatism to a minimum" Why? Because it out screams the message and taints it. Face it the huge majority of voters in this country are not going to vote for the candidate that all the crazies are freaking over, some will even make sure they don't when they might have before.

Play your hand a little and don't blow it. RP has a good thing going, I see a few Ron Paul 2008 signs around where I live, none for anyone else. Things like that are the way to do it and not 50 of em and your house painted with RPREVOLUTION in giant letters or some loon with a megaphone painted in RP war colors wailing in your face on the corner, people remember that shit and what they remember is, "Oh yeah that crazy ass guy".
Some intelligent discourse and campaigning vs ranting, flooding polls, and generaly behaiving like obsessed loons goes a whole lot further.
