Baghdad, 22 Oct. (AKI) - Iraq's president Jalal Talabani (photo) on Monday said that Kurdish rebels would announce a ceasefire later in the night.

The announcement from the Iraqi leader comes amid hectic diplomatic moves to prevent a Turkish attack on northern Iraq.

Reports say an aide to Talabani confirmed that the Iraqi president said that the PKK [the outlawed Kurdistan Workers party] will announce a ceasefire on Monday evening. He was speaking at the airport in the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya.
