Seems more indicative of a mass charge event than am impact or random "ice vein" exposure unless it was a catastrophic failure across a several km distance which then begs the question what the hell could have caused that?

Well I finally got an orbit diagram. This comet is allegedly beyond Mars! But Jupiter is on the opposite side from it, so there's no way it could be the cause of this.

Holy smoke! This is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. Reminiscent of Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock back in '83, yet strangely different. I wonder what it will do next?

Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock (C/1983 H1) was a small comet that, in 1983, made the closest approach to the earth (about 5,000,000 km) of any comet in 200 years.
During the closest approach the comet appeared as a circular cloud about the size of the full moon, shining at a naked eye magnitude of 3-4.
It displayed no discernible tail and swept across the sky at an incredible speed of some 30 degrees per day.

This image is composed of two images obtained by G. W. Kronk of comet 17P/Holmes on 2007 October 25, after it had undergone a brightness outburst of 12-13 magnitudes.
To the naked-eye, the comet's brightness did not seem to change during this period. Each image is a combination of 38 images obtained over a period of two minutes using a 20-cm Meade SCT, an f/3.3 focal reducer, and a MallinCam Hyper video camera. |
