I seriously stared at this thing so long, I had no idea what it was and it freaked me out. I started hunting online and I figured out it was this. Its about 7am in Iowa USA. It is CRAZY bright! I thought the spikes from it were just ecause of my window glaring but I walked outside and it was still there!?!?!? This was crazy amazing to see. I annoyingly woke up about 8 people who were equally impressed. It looks amazing. We have a completely clear sky here. I called my fiance in a city and he could see it too (I happen to be home on a farm visiting my parents so I can see it really well due to the lack of lights here) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 317156

It appears that Holmes basically stays within Jupiter's orbit all the time and has a almost circular orbit itself, it comes near the sun every seven years. What a strange comet IMO, more like a mini planet with an off path ...

It appears so from the default angle, it is well above the planet's plane, you can see that if you you change the settings by scrolling the vertical bar on the side.

Chris Shur of Payson, Arizona, took this picture last night using his 12.5-inch telescope and a Canon XTi digital camera. "The comet was yellow and green, very bright in the viewfinder," he says.
Yesterday, Comet Holmes shocked sky watchers with a spectacular eruption, brightening almost a million-fold from 17th to 2.5th magnitude in a matter of hours. The comet is now visible to the naked eye--even from light polluted cities--high in the northern sky after sunset: finder chart.
The golden hue of Holmes' core is probably the color of sunlight scattered by comet dust, while the green fringe likely signifies an atmosphere rich in diatomic carbon and cyanogen (substances found in many green comets). There are reports that the fuzzball is expanding and taking on a lopsided shape--the first signs of a tail? Amateur astronomers are encouraged to monitor developments. After sunset, point your backyard telescope at the extra "star" in the thigh of Perseus.
