Here in Md the rain stopped today. We had like 40 days without rain been in a drought don't ya know. It started to rain the day the comet showed up so I got my first look at it and WOW. Its very naked eye. The moon is very bright and it does'nt seem to matter. In binocs my wife and I agree it has a green hue. Watching it for about 10 min. so cool looks like stuff coming off of it. How big is the halo? looks big
I going out to look again.
I'm on the Delaware bay side of Jersey, where do I look? N,E, S, or West. Quoting: sx1100
Been thinking same thing--I'm here on Long Island N.Y. Looking NEabout halfway up in the sky is a big tri color star like object--Is this my Comet or am I just seeing things ??? A little help or link. |

Comet finding is rarely an easy thing, even for seasoned skywatchers. But comet Holmes in the Northern Hemisphere, is the easiest comet to find since Hale-Bobb in 1997. Comet McNaught earlier this year was too close to the Sun and too low on the horizon for those in the Northern hemispere. This comet is currently visible pretty much all night in the Northern hemisphere. As the days go by and we get a little further away from the full Moon, this amazing comet will probably reveal even more details.
The thing is, comet hunting can be frustrating, when you're not seeing anything, but once you do spot a comet, you can usually find it right away from then on. So it's worth the initial effort.
This comet is easily visible as starlike object, but the trouble is finding out which of those starlike objects is the comet. That tip about the comet about 10 oclock on the Moon, that is a good tip. If you were to check all the brighter stars in the 9 to 11 position, you would run across the comet. Although the Moon is going to change position relative to the comet so that 10 oclock position is not going to work as the night and days go on. The comet is quite aways from the Moon right now, probably about 15 Moon diameters, but it is in that general direction. Binoculars will clearly reveal that it is comet Holmes and not a star or planet.
Also, here's the star map with comet Holmes from spaceweather.com-
[link to www.spaceweather.com]
I like to start with the constellation Cassiopia, which is readily identifiable in the sky, and then use the relative positions as shown on the skymap to find that curved line of stars in Perseus that points back towards Cassiopia, and the comet is easily visible right to the left of that curved line of stars.
Give it a shot, it'll be easy to find once you do find it! |

Wowwwww ok .....ok ..my mortal self is trying to be realistic about this but you have to admit ..that is fuckin amazing ....damnnnnn think about that for a moment ....a "comet" that is only at most maybe a few miles big can erupt to a size that is thousands of times larger than the Earth !!!!!!!! Bigger than Jupiter !!!!!! That is amazing. Even if you are the most level headed ho hum kind of person that still must be amazing to comprehend.
What if it keeps getting brighter ? What will the people think ? Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us.
Be brave young warriors in truth.

One thing is sure - that amount of eruption/explosion/emission and not a bit of dust trail is impossible! Unless the comet is not moving or the trail lies behind that huge coma and is blocked from view.
And this is the 4th day and spaceweather hasn't updated the sky map. Could independent observers pay attention to the comet's position? Is it moving in relation to the Perseus constellation? |

The "eruption" is very symetrical. Either this thing is a comet and is traveling towards us, or it wasn't/is no longer a comet and it turns into... something. |
