I see a lot of users saying this behaves like Temple-1. In what way? Do you have pics of that one?
This one is churning out gas/debris very much symetrically, I doubt Temple-1 behaved like this. A random hit cannot cause such a symetric reaction, imo. |

You're right, 89446... "a random hit cannot cause such a symmetric reaction", yes.
Random = chaotic. Order cannot come out of chaos or randominity.

Perhaps this thing is not even a comet as many are assuming. This may be an unknown celestial object similar to but distinct from comets. We may be seeing something new. This is a big universe with many surprises.
Lets take a simpler approach, the comet is going round and round minding it's own orbit so to speak and along comes a small solid meteor going in the other direction, in our solar system we have plenty of both, so you have an impact at extremely high speeds, sufficient to fragment the core of the comet, hence the major explosion, since there is little or no friction in space the particles ejected keep expanding.
If my deduction is correct the size of the comet cloud will keep expanding but will also grow "thinner" or more diffused day by day, we should get more detailed pictures of the comet core day by day. Quoting: Prof-Rabbit 148352

i was thinking this just last night. was thinking about 'the eastern star' and comet holmes came to mind......but then it dawned on me that the 'Star of Bethlehem' couldn't have actually been an 'eastern star' since, from the viewpoint of the story of the Magi, the star would have had to have been to the 'west'...(if they hailed from the east)....
but interesting still that we had the same thought! I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. ~ Robert Heinlein |

Check this out:
Scholars argue whether the Star of Bethlehem was a legend created after the fact or a miracle created by God especially for the occasion of Christ’s birth.
But if it was a real astronomical event, what could it have been?
What can we assume about the star
It must have been a newly appeared object, since it drew the wise men from the east.
• The star appeared twice: First it led the Magi to Jerusalem for an audience with Herod. Later, it “stood over” Bethlehem.
• Matthew does not mention that the star was especially bright, and we can assume that Herod and his advisers didn't see it, since he asked the wise men when it had appeared.
• The star is referred to as a single object.
Comets can be ruled out since they were generally thought to be evil omens.
The site goes on to present it as a planet alignment:
[link to www.msnbc.msn.com]
But Holmes looks like a freaky contender. A "new" star. A star that moves. No comet tail. A star that can then simply disappear. I think the planet conjunction is out of the question since it would have to last a long time until the magi reach Bethlehem and then some more and all the time guiding them in the sky. |

 | | Re: 17P/Holmes - Enigma 'Comet' | Quote | Not to mention they would have known the planets and could have discerned between a "new" star and 2 planets aligning. |
