Comet is now maintaining somewhat of a plateau in both overall brightness and size; details are as follows (NOTE current image at bottom of this page)
Coma Diameter, overall: 408", average 8 CCD measures
Jet images emanating at nucleus and extending SW into coma
Nuclear Magnitude (m2) = 9.9 to 10.0
Total Magnitude (m1) = 2.4, slightly down from previous night.

Note that the overall core of the comet is likely to continue to orbit the sun, HOWEVER, the ejected material could be some fair sized bits of rock, so the chance of a meteor storm is related to the vectors involved with the ejecta. Quoting: Prof-Rabbit 148352

For astrology buffs wondering where Comet Holmes fits into their astro chart, I just found a NASA ephemeris on the Astrodienst forum.
Right now it's at 7 degrees Gemini, so if you have planets in the first ten degrees of Gemini, it will impact your chart with incoming galactic energies, pulsations of info. Fun ride. Wasayo |

Can someone calculate how large that spherical "cloud" is? We have the Moon (we know the distance from Earth) and we have the comet's alleged distance from Earth + the comet side by side with the Moon. It's a tough calculus, but it would be interesting to make.
My guess is that the "halo" around the comet is at least the real diameter of our Moon if not bigger! All that and NO TRAIL? Not a bit? Not a faint one? No? Hmm... yeah right. 2 option I tell ya - either that's no comet, either the trail is behind it. END |

No its not a star..if it was why is the star moving the wrong direction in relation to the position of the comet to the large star in the upper right?
The two photos dont match up right if the object in the comet dust was a star it would be farther away in the dust cloud in relation to the star in the upper right. |

How frequent are these "explosions"/"colisions"?
Observations have since been made of Comet Halley as it moves away from the Sun, documenting a steady decrease of activity. When it reached the distance of Saturn, the tail and coma had disappeared completely, leaving only the 5 x 5 x 15 km avocado-shaped "dirty snowball" nucleus.
However, Halley was still good for a major surprise: in 1991, a gigantic explosion happened, providing it with an expanding, extensive cloud of dust for several months. It is not known whether this event was caused by a collision with an unknown piece of rock or by internal processes (a last "sigh" on the way out).

Of course it has everything to do with the Sun. A comets tail always points away from the Sun, due to the influence of the solar wind.
Check out any comet that SOHO spots going round the sun, and see how the angle of the tail changes as it goes round. |
