Re: 17P/Holmes - Enigma 'Comet'
Giant comet may collide with Earth late October

According to the Russian astronomer Nikolai Fedorovsky, a giant comet flying at top speed is bound for Earth. Should the comet stay on the collision course, it may hit the planet in late October. The impact will cause devastating tsunamis, earthquakes and avalanches, says Fedorovsky. He saw the killer comet in a telescope two weeks ago. He managed to calculate the comet’s trajectory. We got in touch with Nikolai Fedorovsky:

“Just a few people are aware of the fact that comets of various sizes fly past Earth at a very close distance on a regular basis,” says Fedorovsky. “Those comets usually pass by unnoticed. The above circumstance is not a guarantee against disaster by any means. The Tunguska meteorite landed in the wilderness of Siberia. What if the behemoth had plunged into the center of Europe or somewhere in the ocean?

“I’m not trying to scare anybody, I just want to warn the public,” sums up Fedorovsky. “We should pay attention to this suspicious celestial body. We could obtain more accurate calculations if other astronomers join forces. We could also photograph it if we’re in luck. We will probably partake in one of the greatest events in the history of humankind,” adds he.

“We shouldn’t underestimate the threat poised by asteroid and comets,” says Igor Gerasimov, deputy director of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute. “More than a thousand meteorite showers cross Earth’s orbit and pose a real threat to life on the planet. We’re watching only nine showers of the above number. Those nine have several dozen objects, which may collide with Earth. The size of the objects varies. Some of them are tiny dust particles while the others have the proportions of gigantic heavenly bodies measuring up to 200 meters in diameter.”

I went to the JPL link.
Distance is a funny thing.

Saw some show the other night re: the mayan thing again and for the first time I saw the same imagery re: the IMF which isn't a monetary fund.. and they were asking all the big questions re: what is coming and showing more of the factual reality of what they don't know about where we are going and what is coming. It all seems a bit of a toss up to me, as everything changes everything all the time..

Now what if all of us are changing it by focusing on it, too?

Re: 17P/Holmes - Enigma 'Comet'
Just how far away is it from earth?

wow I posted this on page 5 and not 1 response.

I had your answer in my post right above yours, on page 5. Holmes is 153 million miles away from Earth.

To add to my previous post about a lack of any telltale signs of a cosmic event so far, no dramatic spikes or anomalies in xrays, energetic protons, elextron flux, nuetrons, muons. There is as mentioned other particles that might not have been detected on Earth as yet. That would be the slower moving protons. Of the type reach the Earth about 1-3 days after a CME on the Sun.

Why go down this road of speculation? Because the light you are seeing from comet Holmes is itself a particle. So as with many types of cosmic events observed visually, you look for other types of particles that may have been emitted at the same and may also be coming our way.

Nothing so far among the particles that travel at near the speed of light, but lets consider if particles were emitted on comet Holmes from this event, that are of the speed of particles emitted from the Sun during a CME. Since comet Holmes is 1.6 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun, and CME particles from the Sun typically take 1 to 3 days to reach Earth, than any particles of similar speed from comet Holmes would reach Earth in about 1 1/2 to 5 days after the event. Since this extreme brightening phenomenon began early on the 24th. I'd say that watching the Proton monitor for any anomalies until the 29th or so, maybe even the end of the month, might be worthwhile, to see if anything turns up.

Bottom line, there still could be some kind of particulate impact on Earth within the next 5 days!

Mystery object seen in southeastern sky
PUBLISHED: October 25, 2007

A large object was seen falling in the southeast sky this morning, leading to speculation among some that it was a meteor.

Law officers in the Sioux Falls area spotted the brilliant object falling to Earth, leaving a wide trail as it descended, around 7:50 a.m.

Though it wasn’t known what the object was, meteor activity right now is high, according to a weekly report from the American Meteor Society.

“A major shower (the Orionids) is active most of the month along with several minor showers,” according to the report from Robert Lunsford, the group’s operations manager.

“The Orionids are the big story of the month reaching maximum activity on Oct. 21,” the report stated.

Meteors from the shower are visible from many parts of the country.

In the Puget Sound region of Washington this week, a motorist reported seeing a streak of light, then a flash, around 6:30 in the morning, according to a report from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Re: 17P/Holmes - Enigma 'Comet'
any update on brightness tonight ?
 Quoting: Ooua

I just went and looked at Comet Holmes here in Minneapolis, with extreme light pollution and obviously extreme moonlight interference tonight. It still jumps right out at ya, if you know where to look. In the Northern hemisphere, the easiest comet to spot since Hale-Bopp in 1997.

I estimate tonight it is still 2 to 2.5 magnitude, about the same as I saw it late this morning.

You can't just look up and see it, the comet is stellar in appearance, and the hundreds of stars of that magnitude. You have to know where to look.

I'll cut and paste below my responses I made on another GLP thread about how to find the comet. I think it's the easiest way for those who don't do much skywatching-

Here's how I spotted it. Alot of people who watch the sky use a technique of "star hopping" to find their way to a less familiar part of the sky.

Here's the finding chart for comet Holmes from spaceweather.com-

[link to www.spaceweather.com]

If you're not familiar with it, a good constellation to get to know, is the constellation Cassiopia. Cassiopia is like a zig zag shaped line, as shown on the map. It's a good jumping off point since the various angles point to different parts of the sky.

In this case, as shown in the finding chart, Cassiopia is marked near the top of the map. As a reference point, if you were to take the least bright star in Cassiopia, fix that point, and then swing the rest of the constellation around to the right, then the zig zag Cassiopia would be brushing the top of the Constellation Perseus, near where the comet is.

Also note in the finding chart how the top of Perseus kind of curves and points towards Cassiopia.

So find Cassiopia, swing it around, find that string of stars in Perseus that points towards Cassiopia. And wow, there's the comet!

That point of light is not supposed to be there, and wasn't there two days ago. Easily naked eye. Once you find it, you'll be able to track this thing for days within seconds of looking up! Check it out. It's obvious, right there, jumping out at 'ya!

Note that the finding chart is for the evening after sunset, by midnight local time, Cassiopia, Perseus and the comet are nearly directly overhead.

I use the sky charts at heavens-above.com , to find an area of the sky I'm unfamiliar with. You can enter your location here, then go to the main page and click on 'whole sky chart', which will be customized for your location and time-

[link to www.heavens-above.com]

Here's a pic from spaceweather.com which shows the relative magnitudes-

[link to spaceweather.com]

Note that Alpha Perseus, the brightest star in the constellation Perseus, is 1.8 magnitude. And Delta Perseus is 3.0 magnitude. Both of these are right next to the comet as shown in the pic.<

Don't just look at the pictures and talk about it on the internet, go out, look up, and see this historic phenomenon for yourself!

 Quoting: Ooua

Yeah, northeast. It's pretty high above the horizon right now where I am around 9 pm local time. Note you can observe this comet all night in the Northern hemisphere. Around midnight to 2am local time, the comet is almost directly overhead. (it's also the darkest part of the night and has the least atmospheric interference, looking directly up) So that spaceweather.com finding chart for early evening becomes kind of irrelevant as the night goes. If you can't find Cassiopia or Perseus later in the night, use a whole sky chart for your location like those on heavens-above.com. Happy hunting! It's easy!

For those who keep insisting that the lack of a visible tail means the comet is headed towards us, you are again exposing your CENTRICITIES about yourselves. It is NOT all about us. The universe does not revolve around our planet!

There is no giant bullseye on our planet coaxing wayfaring comets and meteorites to try and take a shot at us. Not every object in space has a beeline trajectory pointing straight to us. Space is vast. VAST!! Distances between us and other objects are much, much greater than you think.

Even if 17P/Homes WAS headed in our general direction, the odds that it would actually hit us are just not worth even mentioning.

I don't know where people get these fanciful ideas. If you're thinking "billiard balls on a billiards table," that is the wrong impression. Think more like "marbles in the Sahara desert."
