17P/Holmes - Enigma 'Comet'

Don't think so - comet tails point away from the SUN, not from the travel direction.

I haven't read that the "comet has no tail".

What I've read said the comet has no 'noticeable' tail, which I inferred meant that the tail was not within our viewpoint, which does not necessarily mean that there isn't one, right? Of course, I haven't read everything posted about this comet, so perhaps I've missed something?

That's nice semantics, but unless or before a tail does show up, the statement "the comet has no tail" is not false since a tail is not visible.

I don't know if we'll be able to see the comet through all the California smoke and chemtrails.....darn...

Actually it's a mix of both ...
A comet has three different tails, the ion tail points away from the sun, the hydrogen tail mostly and the dust tail mostly follows the path of movement.

But this ain't no normal comet.

The comet itself is brighter, not because its closer and even if it was, from the brightness discribed even regular observatories would know so no conspiricy and no doom for you!

The comet's tail always points away from the sun as it moves away from the Sun.

Yes that's right, Comet Holmes looks like a star! It does not have a fuzzy head or tail, yet. So it looks like Perseus has a new star!

Based on that logic I could easily state "GLP User 89446 has no brain" (which of course based on your logic would not be false since your brain is not visible to me). Then, of course, you could state the same about me, which, based on your logic would also not be false (but in reality, would be wrong ) :)

I am not saying definitively that the comet absolutely without a shred of doubt DOES have a tail - I was simply saying that I had not read where scientists were asserting for a fact that it has no tail, and then, if you note, I added that I had not read everything about this yet - leaving the reader to understand that I was conceding the possibility....

Hmm, I don't need a scientist to tell me what I see. From the pictures released and from the pictures of past comets, I could say this has no tail. However I did say it could be a visual effect of it moving the opposite direction from us! Don't know why we're arguing.

The read on GLP about the same time as the B-52 nuke scandle, that nukes were being fired at an Earth bound comet.

Holmes is NOT moving farther away according to the orbital program, it's moving slightly closer because the earth is slightly catching up to it at this time.

And the reason there's no tail is that it is extended AWAY from us right now. If you draw a straight line from the sun to the earth to the comet it nearly makes a straight line, hence the tail is behind the comet right now.

From what I've read about it, the nucleus of comet Holmes isn't that large. Anywhere from 1.7 to 3.5 kilometers. That means you could get in your car, and drive across the face of comet Holmes in a couple minutes.

The startling thing is, comet Holmes is currently 152 million miles away. 1.6 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. How could something that small, at that enormous distance, become so bright?

Of course, normally, comet outbursts like this happen much closer to the Sun. Currently comet Holmes is 227 million miles away from the Sun! Moving away from the Sun. But a couple nights ago, it increased in brightness anywhere from 1 million to 3 million times!

So what is going on, that something that small, and that far away, can have that big of a brightness increase?

Puzzling over this, yesterday I did an internet search of whether there was any telltale signs often associated with cosmic events, like radiation or particle level spikes. No spikes and nothing unusual on xrays, no spikes or anything unusual on energetic protons, nothing unusual on electron flux, nothing out of the ordinary on cosmic rays, nuetrons, or muons.

Most of those particles move at near the speed of light, so they should have showed up right away. So that made me think, there would be one thing left that we would have to wait. That would be the less energetic protons, the type of thing in solar winds when a CME hits. They aren't moving as fast, and they take time to get here. So I figured, wait to see if anytime turns up in the satellite environment plots and proton monitors in a couple days.

Well, today something big did turn up in the proton monitors-

A big spike in the speed of less energetic protons and density! Now, NOAA and spaceweather.com is attributing this to a coronal hole. Indeed, they have been predicting active conditions for this period since before comet Holmes brightened.

The thing is, that is the only thing I've seen indicating anything out of the ordinary. Can anyone think of any other levels to check to see if anything unusual is going on? I didn't go through all that HAARP crap, but there's alot of other stuff out there.

They would be shocked IF its orbit alters. But it is still too early in the event to determine that.

well.., these same astronomers are already shocked by the explosion in its intensity...
