Testing

The "test" was last year.

A new pic, it's not very spectacular again but consider the dust cloud has spread out so much meanwhile that it doesn't reflect much light so only the core displays itself here:

The extremely faint large diffuse object may be detected with a best sky condition, around 5-6 mag with a diameter of 1 or 2 degrees. Current brightness of the central core is 17.8 mag (Oct. 31, Ken-ichi Kadota), much brighter than pre-outburst brightness still now.

Meanwhile it's twin 29P shows the very similar expansion effect like 17P did a year ago.

It keeps bright as 10.6 mag still in November (Nov. 8, Marco Goiato). Now the diameter is over 4 arcmin, looks very large and diffuse

I only wonder that 29P doesn't get more coverage on the astronomical sites as it somehow is even more puzzling than Holmes as it's diameter is around 30kms compared to the 3kms of Holmes, it's just that due to it's current greater distance from earth is isn't than bright as Holmes was the year before.

I saw "comet" Holmes at 5:34 am EDT on Friday October 31, 2008.

I used 8 X 50 binoculars. It appeared as a blue-ish ring, like a planetary nebula.

To find it, locate Gemini, and it will be half way to Regulus. That is straight overhead in the USA.

It requires nearly perfect sky conditions.

You know why this thread wont die ? And why it keeps getting resurrected ? It is because Holmes was a symbol beyond just an astronomical event. It was a symbol of something wished upon, hoped for, dreamed of and so on and so forth : )

Holmes was a peoples creation.

And there is more yet to come.
