Pesky Worm gets Nine into Strife

THE worm triggered a row and claims of censorship last night after Channel Nine ran it in defiance of the Prime Minister's wishes only to have its "feed" from Canberra cut. Before the debate, John Howard said he did not want the worm, which measures a studio audience's reaction. Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd favoured it. Channel Nine's director of news and current Affairs, John Westacott, told The Age last night: "I think the National Press Club … pulled the Channel Nine feed and then pulled our back-up feed. We were forced to take Sky News feed off air, which we did for the last third of the debate." The first call came from an ABC technician who said the feed was about to be cut because Channel Nine was running the worm. "Then there were calls from the Press Club. Then they pulled our feed." Press Club chief executive Maurice Reilly said Channel Nine was offered the broadcast on certain conditions, which included no live worm. Mr Westacott said there had been no agreement on whether the worm could run with Channel Nine's coverage. "I said we were interested in taking the debate and we will do with it what we will," Mr Westacott said. "This was somebody bowing to political pressure. I think it was a blatant act of censorship by the ABC and the Press Club."It's not for the Press Club, the Liberal Party or anybody else to decide the editorial policy of the Nine Network."

The ALP and the Greens supported the use of the worm, which the Government did not. That made it a political matter, not an editorial matter. "The Liberal Party was deliberately trying, for whatever reason, to have as little attention to this debate as possible. The Channel Nine studio audience overwhelmingly saw Mr Rudd as the winner of the debate: 65 per cent of the audience of 90 said he had done better in the televised battle, while just 29 per cent said Mr Howard had been the victor. During the debate the worm dropped into the red when Mr Howard defended Australia's continued involvement in Iraq. It stayed there even as Mr Howard explained the evolving role of Australia's combat troops in southern Iraq. It climbed back up as Mr Rudd explained his plan to pull out the combat troops by mid-2008.The worm climbed steeply as Mr Rudd congratulated Mr Howard and Mr Downer on their efforts to end the death penalty around the world. On the question of an apology to Aborigines, Mr Howard got a positive response from the worm as he said he was sorry for what happened to indigenous Australians but that did not mean he was responsible for it.

The worm climbed again as he said that if re-elected he would sit down with indigenous leaders to find solutions. It dropped deep into the red when Mr Howard explained the benefits of his industrial relations policy. But it soared back up again as Mr Rudd spoke of workers being stripped of their benefits. Mr Westacott said that to add to the outrage, Channel Nine had been billed for the service. "On Friday (they) sent us a bill for it, which is another outrage. Channel Nine had been the host broadcaster in the past and provided the service free to anyone who wanted to take it. That was the practice when the ABC did it as well." The bill covered the costs of cleaning the Great Hall and the ABC outside broadcast costs, which have not been determined. [link to www.theage.com.au]
