The mother made a serious mistake in taking her son to a doctor in the first place. Had she and her son both kept their mouths shut, they could have quietly cured his illness and nothing would be known. The only risk would be in school and mandatory PE, where other students would have the opportunity to get a look at anything strange on his skin. California made homeschooling illegal because they were embarrassed that the homeschooled students did so much better on tests than those in the school system. Again, had she been thinking straight, she'd have known from the beginning what she faced.
