Advice for a new Computer
My first desktop computer was a Tulip visionline :Pentium 90 Mhz with 8 Mb of Ram
Of course,the memory prouved insufficient and was augmented to 16 mb which was a HUGE improuvement
Tipically,when you buy a new computer ,you basically buy the best and most expensive processor with a lot of garbage added
At that time ,the newest processors were Pentiums at 90,100,120,150 Mhz
I challenge you to find ANY diff btwn the 90 and the 150 Mhz version ,although the latest was for "professionals who can afford to pay 5 times more":))))
BUT,If you take that old proc and add 512 mb of memory ,you can still run Vista totday,although very,excruciatingly slow
Typicaly ,people do the next mistakes:
-they spend a huge ammount of money on a new computer
-then they realize that they need more memory,a video card, asound card ,a wireless keyboard ,etc
-so they spend another huge pile of money
-then they realize that they need a new computer

So my advice is:
-buy the cheapest proc from the best line
-do not buy experimental models like "quad-core with 2 dual-cores inside"
-do not buy very new models ,as each line of processors yields good and bad processors and at the beginning they are all sold at 1000$ each;later they are placed into categories:e2140 for the worst,e6550 for the best dual-core
-do not buy celerons with deactivated cores-60% perf reduction
-buy the cheapest video card for your mb from the newest line of videocards:same comments about quality apply here
-buy the cheapest motherboard from the newest line of chipsets(x38);do not buy expensive third-party chipsets from Nvidia,Ati,VIA,etc
-buy the best power source with 80% eff
(3 times I changed my computer because of a faulty power source which shuted down it at times)
-buy the best 7.1 surround system,monitors,mices,keyboards and other peripherals
-buy the best web-cams ,hdds from Creative ,Genius or WD or Seagate
-do not buy peripherals from producers like Manta,etc

Re: Advice for a new Computer
choose the path of succesive cheap upgrades like this:
-bought a Pentium 4 in March for 100$
-buy an e2140 now for 70$-replace and sell the p4 for 50$
-bought an ATI 9550 in March
-buy now a Nvidia 8500
etc...

I had that happen a few times too, one power unit i had didn't shut down the pc, instead it just froze it!! which had me swapping bloody everything except the mobo and prosser grrrrr
Be aware people that power units can cause freezes/shutdowns/BSOD's and program errors too! much to my horror.
Usually the first thing i check now when things go bad, easy done just goto bios and check for voltage fluctuations.

that's a good advice!

also ,remember that the MB is the most important performance -related component!
still,it is not worthy to buy anew comp just to change your MB

I went from a old 1mhz, 1mb ram, 12mb drive to;

33mhz, 4mb ram, 1 mb video. (was cruising) to;

80mhz, 16mb ram, 4mb video. to;

166mhz, 24mb ram, 16mb video. --- from 80 to 166, there IS a huge difference. Challange taken and challange failed on your end. How can I prove this? I can't..... But it was a hell of a lot faster. to;

200mhz 32mb ram, 16mb video to;

333 mhz, 64mb ram, 24mb video to;

400mhz, 64mb ram, 32mb video (still have this celeron and it runs great on linux. to;

1gb, 128 ram, 32mb vid. to;

1.6gb, 128 ram, 64 mb vid to;

2.4ghz, 384 mb ram, 128mb vid to;

My current home build.

AMD64 3500+ clock 2.3ghz, 2gb ram, 512mb 16 pipe vid OC 7800GS to 7900GS.

Indeed, 11 PCs I've had. Fried 1 overclocking it, the mobo book showed the jumpers incorrectly.

Oddly, I still have alot of the old equipment I use for different things.

I can remember when they came out with 200mhz and 32gb drives.

They said they would hold us for another 40 years and we could really never fill the 32gb drive. lmao

I have 3 200gb drives, 2 nearly full. I don't keep that much info etc. either. I can only imagine what a pack-rat would have. :D

Re: Advice for a new Computer
Coincidentally, I am also in the market in search of a new computer. I expected this quest would not resemble that of purchasing a new vehicle but I fear that it has out stripped that most distatesful passage of life.

Being a techno peasant comfortable with the means of communication that united a dixie cup and thread I am usually like a dear high on daisies staring into high beams when I go into one of them gadget computer stores dazzle by a pre pubescent acneed teen speaking a language and snake oil dialect that may as well be Greek.

So I empathize in this traverse that requires prescient decisions on Mac v. Pc... Xp v. Vista twilight zone... I could go on but who would care.. anyhow.. good luck and may you find a sound and reliable virtual platform
