Re: ***SERIOUS POST...DON'T FEED YOUR CAT FRISKIES CANNED CAT FOOD!!!***
Thanks for the heads up! My mom just gave me 8 cans of friskies, not knowing that my cat won't eat it. My cat prefers tuna and sardines...No worries, tune does not last long and fresh outta the can btw! My cat does not do the wet food trip, only a treat on occasion ,but kitty no like friskies so we usually get a small taste of people food as a treat. But I do have hear 8 cans of food that may well be tainted!

Hm..white gums eh...

Vomiting - vomiting several times within the hour, especially if blood appears in the vomitus, the cat is lethargic, or refuses to eat. Possible causes include ingestion of a foreign object, liver and kidney disease, gastrointestinal problems, and poisoning.

Diarrhea - diarrhea is a symptom of many conditions or diseases. Diarrhea may cause the cat to suffer from dehydration, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, high fever, lethargy, bloody and/or watery stools. Possible causes are stomach or intestinal viruses, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretions (i.e., eating garbage or other offensive or irritating materials), inflammatory bowel disease, neoplasia, fungal or bacterial infection, hyperthyroidism, and loss of pancreatic function. If diarrhea is persistent, immediate vet care is vital.

***Change in Gum Color - if any change in a cat's normally pink gums become white, blue, yellow, or bright red, see a vet immediately. White or pale gums may indicate anemia or systemic shock; blue gums from breathing problems; yellow gums from red blood cell destruction, liver disease, or gall bladder disease; red gums from septic shock or severe infection.

What about the friskies packet food?
 Quoting: Sireen-reborn

that was my question, too!

the first time around my cats were getting Fancy Feast in the can, then they got tired of it, so we tried Friskies. They HATED it, so we bought them whiskas packets. Funny thing is we can't really find any wet feed they eat all the way. When its a new flavor they might eat some of it. The Friskies they sniff it and walk away. With the Whiskas packets, they only eatl/lick the JUICE! So when they're done doing that, we put the chunks outside for the homeless kitty. Our cats only eat dry Kit n' Kaboodle, too.

Sometimes they sample the dogs food.

Hey, you guys know that IAN PUNNETT's dog died from tainted dog food?

Re: ***SERIOUS POST...DON'T FEED YOUR CAT FRISKIES CANNED CAT FOOD!!!***
The other night I opened a can of solid white albacore tuna in water.

I rarely eat tuna, but if I do, I'd rather it not be pink and mushy.

So I drained it into a bowl and my cat woke up out of a snowstorm sleep-coma and started yelling at me. She wasn;t mewing or meowing, she was yelling "HEY! Hey YOU!!! What's that you've got there! HEY!! I'm gonna wrap my ass around your leg in a minute! YO!!"

She's never been particularly vocal before.

So I had to give her some tuna. That was a mistake.

Now she thinks her regular food is crap and she looks at me like she knows there's another can in the cabinet.

I thought she'd forget after a day or 2, but she's still looking for it. At $1.69 a can, it's not going to happen often.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Never give your cat tuna that has been opened for even only a couple of hours, never leave it in their bowl, it is quickly lethal.

Tuna Fresh out of the can is excellent, and give them only enough tuna that they can eat in your presence in ten minutes. And then immediately wash out the bowl or can. Tuna in trash cans or dumpsters can kill a cat quickly.

Otherwise tuna is excellent. And yes, they will boycott anything else until they get real hungry.

I repeat do not leave tuna sitting around for them unless you hate your cat and want it dead in a short time.

You even have to watch dry Friskies as they will over eat it and gorge themselves and puke it up.. someone told me it is very high in phosphorus, the dry Friskies, since I stopped feeding it to my cats they no longer puke up after eating.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 330782

Thanks for the tuna tip. I'll keep that in mind when I give my cat tuna. Although, I don't see a half-full kitty bowl sitting around as anything that could ever happen at our house.

We feed the cat outside, because he somehow manages to get canned cat food all over the floor when he eats, and it's hard to clean up after it dries. So we feed him outside now, and the frogs always quickly finish off whatever he doesn't eat.

I get up in the morning to a cat in my face demanding his breakfast, which he knows will be fed to him outside. When I open the door to let him out to eat, there are already half a dozen frogs sitting outside the door waiting for THEIR breakfast. My cat is a killer, but he doesn't care about frogs; he just ignores them as if they aren't even there or at best looks at them disdainfully. The frogs sit there and wait for him to finish eating, then when he walks away from the bowl, they are all over it. I have a yard full of some of the fattest frogs you have ever seen. I've given them all names and they're not afraid of me or the cat. They still eat bugs, though, and I'm glad, because I don't want them to lose the ability to take care of themselves.

As far as I know I have yet to hear a satisfactory answer for the dying pets(cats and dogs)from the pet food not that long ago.

My surviving cat eats live most the time and does much better. When she is supplemented with petfood she has alot more digestive disorders.

I have never known Lady Wolf to be a bullshit artist. I noticed you did not quote her entire post. As far as the part you did quote is concerned, Lady Wolf made it quite clear that she was giving us what another person paraphrased Friskies response to be.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that after all the pet food recalls that have taken place that pet food companies would now be looking to sweep any new problems under the rug as much as possible. Consumers can only tolerate so many failures before they start losing confidence in an industry. I have already completely lost confidence in the pet food industry and will not risk feeding their products to my cat anymore.

They went offshore to make a quick buck without giving any thought to the consequences, and now they will lose money because of it. Pay third world wages, and you get third world quality in return. If corporations had not been so greedy, they would've realized this. I refuse to feed my cat third world quality cat food made by a bunch of people who don't even give a damn about humans let alone pets.

Friskies wasted my cat before its time, it is crap

The two gourmets I have now only eat Fancy Feast, Iams, or tuna. Unfortunately, the store tuna has soy in it, which is not good, so I get the healthy stuff whenever possible.

Re: ***SERIOUS POST...DON'T FEED YOUR CAT FRISKIES CANNED CAT FOOD!!!***
Our cats, too, won't even TOUCH Friskies canned food. They insist on "Little Sheba" brand "gourmet" cat food. We pay about 99 cents a can for it unless we go to the pet-smart and then we pay about 69 cents a can. Two cans per day plus an occasional late night snack if we're having one. This stuff is like Cat Crack Cocaine or something. Once they've had it they won't go back to anything else or anything cheaper! Our cats are much loved and much spoiled pampered pets.I cannot complain. We're the ones who convinced them the were mostly human and now they act like they are. Oh well. Worse things they could do. And we do NOT have any mice or other rodents anywhere near the house so I think one of them is augmenting her diet with some very fresh meat now and then. Always pays to keep those hunting skills up to par and sharp.

What's with these damned pet food companies? Can't they come up with a formula that doesn't risk the lives of the pets their making this stuff to feed? You would think that one of them would have the sense to capitalize on this scare and advertise themselves as 100% tested and 100% safe - every day - every feeding and back it up by lab tests on an ongoing basis! Would make a whole lot of sense, IMHO.

FWIW, Found a box of Friskies dry food in the cupboard that had been bought a couples of months ago by mistake. Mixed it up with our usual premium brand because I didn't want it to go to waste. Within a week of feeding it to our 8 yr. old kitty, she died.

Happened very suddenly Sat. night. She started panting very hard and meowing really weird. We scooped her up, got in the car to take her to the Emerg. vet clinic and she died in the parking lot before we could get her inside 15 minutes later.

It's certainly possible that it was something else, like an embolism or heart attack, but I will never forget that I might have prematurely ended her life by feeding her this bull shit cat food. I really should have wasted it instead of her.

Re: ***SERIOUS POST...DON'T FEED YOUR CAT FRISKIES CANNED CAT FOOD!!!***
You guys... this is NOT related to TUNA in this instance it is just related to the food.

I have always purchased canned foods for my cats (6 and 7 yrs old) that is Grain Free and free of preservatives, my house has the AC turned up at all times to it doesn't get hotter than 72 in here (which is still considered the danger zone but I figured cooked canned food should be able to last a few hrs at night) well recently I purchased a whole BOX of Friskies canned foods (wet) because I had ran out of wet food (plenty dry) and I knew my boy cat needed added moisture + I was at vons and this was pretty much all my options for buying bulk at a discount... (9:00 pm while grocery shopping)

Well we are on our third can, buuuut I left the contents of 1 can sitting out from 8:00 pm yesterday and woke up today to go to the bathroom (5:45 am) and of course Kitties were hungry so I left to go get them food and WTF... I look at their dish and it almost looked like BLOOD, as if one of my kitties had thrown up in their food bowl, so I grabbed the dish looked closer and it appears that some "gravy" or the slime that is on the food turned Red, unnaturally red. Kat Mama...I don't know anything further, other than she did tell my daughter that she should be especially concerned about any of that canned cat food that was bought within the last couple of weeks. I'm sure that this vet has been in contact with other vets to have determined this much...we will see. I just can not believe all of these pet food poisonings that are goin on! When is all of this going to stop!??

For those of you who feed this to your cats and have it on hand...don't throw it out! Save it until the recall comes out so you can get your money back...but please don't feed it to you cats until we have more info!
 Quoting: Lady Wolf

Umm...what type of Friskies canned cat food? I quit feeding mine any type with a gravy or sauce years ago. The gluten gives my cat IB. It also seems to be the source of previous poisonings.
I also try to avoid the ocean fish varieties because of obvious reasons.
Occasionally one cat will puke the whole feeding up. I need to pay more attention to the flavor fed when that happens.

Re: ***SERIOUS POST...DON'T FEED YOUR CAT FRISKIES CANNED CAT FOOD!!!***
letting cats hunt outside is NOT a good idea. Not if you love and value your cat.

An indoor cat can live a life expectancy of 22 years. Given a good diet and decent genetics, most of that 22 years will be a heathy happy life.

An outdoor cat has a statistically average life expectancy of 2.3 years in a city and less in the country where there are animal predators nearby who are all too willing to see your kitty as lunch or a tasty snack.

KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS and feed them a high quality diet preferably a good high protein dry food and supplement it with a can or two of high quality wet food once or twice per week. It is easy and you will have your feline companion with you for a much longer time than you would if you let them out.

Scooping out a cat box once a day is a small price to pay for their safety and having that love they give you for a third of your life!

I fed my cat Friskies canned all through 2007 to present and still no problems of any kind with my cats.
I think the main problem people have is not providing their cats enough FRESH water that the cats want to drink.
Cat gets sick and they blame it on the cat food.
WATER is key to cat's living a long healthy life, and not scummy water - FRESH water.

I know this is going to sound a lot like a typical fake doom post, but I've been with GLP long enough to have earned some credibility, so this is what I have to say...hope you'll heed the warning even though I have no link or proof...

My daughter has a friend who works at a veterinary office in Tahoe. She says that they have had several cats come in that are very sick and some have even died! They all have been poisoned from eating Friskies canned cat food!!! She says that her friend told her that even though this has not been made public yet, she wanted to let my daughter know, because she knows that my daughter has two cats of her own, and that she feeds them Friskies.

AGAIN...NO CONFIRMATION AND NO LINK...JUST A WARNING FROM A PHONE CALL THAT MY DAUGHTER RECEIEVED FROM HER FRIEND THAT WORKS AT A VET IN TAHOE ABOUT CATS COMING INTO THE OFFICE VERY SICK AND SOME HAVE DIED!!!

Just don't give her the solid white albacore. Give her the cheaper stuff maybe mixed in with other cat food. Anyway, the cheaper tuna has less mercury in it. The solid white is loaded with it. Got a family member still recovering from eating too much of it and getting mercury poisoning.

BTW, cats go by smell and not so much taste when eating. And since tuna is so smelly that is why she likes it. Again, add a little of it to her regular food. This is also good when cats are sick. If they can't smell they won't eat which spells disaster. People have even heated up tuna(to make it smellier) so their sick cat will eat.

So look for sales on the cheap tuna. And if you like solid white albacore just don't have more than one can a month.
