I had not seen Hunter in person for a long time but caught him, of all places, on a Charlie Rose show late one night. It was his last appearance. He looked bad, bloated and slurred like he had had a stroke. I felt really bad for him, former gonzo man. He always put on that big front but was cool. I think he saw his powers, life force, whatever.....dwindling. He worshipped Hemingway. When Hem got older the same thing happened to him. Former larger-than-life character could not come to grips with a failing body and life energy....he could come to grips with death easier than that, anything but that. |

Thank you for sharing that. I always wondered what it would be like to hang out with him for a few hours...
On a completely selfish note, I was bummed to know I would never have the chance to ask him to sign my 1st print copy of Kingdom of Fear.
The man's been an inspiration to me in one way or another for more than a decade and a half. He is the reason I visisted Pu'uhonua o Honaunau. He is the single largest influence in my own writing style and the reason I got published. We lost more than an Original Freak when he left us behind. We lost a voice.
In his own twisted way, he passed on so much wisdom - there is more than one HST quote I will carry with me to the grave. He showed us all that one can buck convention and still succeed. And by "buck convention," I of course refer to the gratutiotous use of hard chemicals and alcohol. As he once said, "I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone... but they've always worked for me."
It didn't matter whether it was Sonny Barger, Al Davis, or Richard Nixon - he would look 'em all in the eye, and he always called it like he saw it.
While we may have lost a legend, the Curse of Lono will forever live on... as will his wisdom. "In a world full of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity." Immortal words to live by.

Cool, I'm unbanned on this client, I was just checking.

I could go on.............ok, you twisted my arm.
HST ran for sheriff in Pitkin Co. The main scene was Aspen of course, and it was freak central in those days. The rest of the county was Colorado ranch n' redneck. Hunter walked around town in a blond Kanekalon wig. I'll never forget that because he reminded everyone constantly that it was "genuine Kanekalon". His campaign poster was done by an artist who lived there, Tom Benton. The theme was a clenched fist with a peyote button in it. The local ranch and ski industry people were freaked. I remember one of the campaign planks was the sheriff was to confiscate any and all drugs being sold and they were to be distributed for free by the sheriffs office. Ha. Huunter lost by 6 VOTES!
There was talk of a recount and all that but Hunter called it off. I always thought he was afraid he might actually win. LOL
I had just gotten out of the military and Hunter took a keen interest because my specialty had been in explosives. He wanted to know all I could tell him and we talked for hours about it. |

Let's face it, the yo-yo president of the U.S.A. knows nothing. He is a dunce. He does what
he is told to do, says what he is told to say, poses the way he is told to pose. He is a fool.
No. Nonsense. The president cannot be a Fool. Not at this moment in time, when the last
living vestiges of the American Dream are on the line. This is not the time to have a bogus
rich kid in charge of the White House.
Which is, after all, our house. That is our headquarters, it is where the heart of America lives.
So if the president lies and acts giddy about other people's lives, if he wantonly and stupidly
endorses mass murder by definition, a loud and meaningless animal with no functional
intelligence and no balls.
To say this goofy child president is looking more and more like Richard Nixon in the summer
of 1974 would be a flagrant insult to Nixon.
Whoops! Did I say that? Is it even vaguely possible that some New Age Republican whore-beast
of a false president could actually make Richard Nixon look like a Liberal?
The capacity of these vicious assholes we elected to be in charge of our lives for four years
to commit terminal damage to our lives and our souls and our loved ones is far beyond Nixon's.
Shit! Nixon was the creator of many of the once-proud historical landmarks that these dumb
bastards are savagely destroying now: the Clean Air Act of 1970; Campaign Finance Reform;
the endangered species act; a Real-Politik dialogue with China; and on and on. |

That's a tough situation to face- when does the quality of life shit the bed to the point where it's the right thing to do. Final Exit and all that. Taking the responsibility to relieve your loved ones of the strain. But then they face new problems- the loss.
My father (a Korean war vet yet not a gun guy) faced the same thing. I sat with him and his doctor when he made it clear he didn't want any more medical treatment. It hurt like hell to come to terms with that for me, but watching his deterioration made it understandable. But we followed his wishes; no funeral. We had a party as instructed- no ties allowed. Much booze was consumed, many stories relived; he was there with us in spirit. We scattered his ashes in every sand trap on his favorite golf course. That way a little bit of Big Ed will forever play on that course.
OK, waxing sentimental here...Christ on a cruch I hate crying.
Another point to consider- it's not the death that kills me (no pun intended), it's the fact that his wife wouldn't let him die in his own home as he wished.
