Vilama Caldera in Argentina showing signs of harmonic tremor – signs of a mega volcano in 2012?
India Daily Technology Team
Aug. 24, 2007

A supervolcano hidden in a veritable mega-volcano nursery called the Eduardo Avaroa Caldera Complex, located in the inhospitable Puna-Altiplano region near the tri-section of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile is a major focus of many volcano experts in recent days.

The harmonic tremor is appreciating in a cyclical way. There are signs of trouble ahead. An extrapolation in the time axis points to a possible mega eruption in 2012.

Vilama Caldera formed during a single event that emitted approximately 2000 cubic kilometers (almost 500 cubic miles) of pyroclastic material," said geologist Miguel M. Soler of the National University of Jujuy in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina. The volume of ash and pyroclastic material, called ignimbrites, produced by the 8.4 million-year-old eruption, and the size of the associated caldera, put it among the world’s largest known eruptions.

The Vilama Caldera appears to have been created when the 10 by 24-mile roof catastrophically collapsed on a chamber of molten rock, or magma, explosively venting vast amounts of ignimbrites out in various directions. That massive roof collapse is the one thing all large calderas have in common and what separates them from the exponentially smaller "single vent" volcanic eruptions like Mount St. Helens or Mount Pinatubo.

same story, slightly more credible source.

bit concerning, given all the tectonic activity down there lately.

I chased that down myself, and read Miguel Soler's abstract.

There's nothing in Dr. Soler's paper that talks about 2012 or any sense of urgency; I think the self-styled "technology team" in the India Daily (who copied the geo soc article almost word-for-word over a year later) just made that up to sell a few more papers.

What is interesting is that the scientists think the causes for the Vilama supervolcano were different than those of the Yellowstone supervolcano based on the difference in caldera shape and the fact that the Vilama caldera is near a tectonic boundary and the Yellowstone is not.

Do you have any idea how big a caldera complex can be? Look at this picture: it's the Kilauea caldera -- it's about one-tenth as big as Vilama:

I like volcanoes and will be visiting some more in February, but I certainly wouldn't want to be within a thousand km of Vilama the next time it pops.
Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim?

Ever been tempted to give up dating altogether and just stick to SMS romance?

Mobile messaging is great for first contact, flirting and of course, party alerts. But then you get face to face with a master texter and their attentive digital flirting is replaced by fascinating (not) verbal insights into the general merits of Holden versus Ford, adjustments to the footie laws and how to get high scores on the latest PlayStation game.

But then if you try hard enough and wait long enough, one day all your stars slip into alignment and you find yourself on a real date, being intellectually stimulated by Brad Pitt's younger, and slightly cuter brother.
And what happens?

Warm eye to eye contact turns to hot embarrassed flushes as his attention moves upwards from the two pretty blue eyes he's been gazing wistfully into, to the third one throbbing away on your forehead. The spell is broken; your romantic evening is savagely assaulted and left bleeding in the gutter.
It's a fast and particularly painful death.

Sounds familiar? Hide that third eye with Clearasil Tinted Pimple Treatment Cream
