| Anonymous Coward User ID: 257077 United States11/29/2007 05:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | come to think of it...under bridges was always pretty good for hunkering down too. lay your plastic down...then layer the papers (pick up from the train stations or in back of publishing houses)...cover with the plastic (with the paper and you in the middle). sort of like a human hot dog. it works and keeps the rain/sleet/snow/wind out. train stations/bus stations are all pretty good for catching a nap, maybe even a wash up. a lot of little towns will allow you to stay in their jail for a night if it's stormy...and the donuts are pretty good. anyway, a bridge usually has others under too that will help you. be careful as they're prepared. ummmm...carry a knife you can reach if needed in a hurry. has to be under 9 inches in most states though to keep it legal. |

Unless you're a modern day Davey Crockett, I'd say you have a better chance of ending up in jail or starving to death than you do of succeeding in your attempt to "rough it" for the next several years. I prefer the wilder area's, don't go to deep in, just off the road a little. Learn to make short squat leans. I have used dry leaves stuffed in between two shirts and two pairs of pant as a way of insulating. I also learned a multitude of ways to start a fire. Learning a few string traps can help, most of the time you don't catch much, but occasionally you get lucky. A wild rodent or two can be a great delicacy when you are hungry. |

You should probably think up a better plan. If you do go for it, though, make it pay. Do this; 1) Keep copious notes about everything. Make sure to include lots of "human interest" stories. 2) Buy a few cheapo disposable point-'n-click cameras, and take the best shots you can. Especially of "forgotten" America, and any UFOs you might encounter. And have a cheap little recording device, to capture the accents and attitudes of the "local yokels". 3) A cheap cellphone with a decent camera could be good, too. Set up a MySpace site, and update it regularly from Internet Cafes. You could style yourself as "Wanderin' Guy". 4) After two years or so, return to civilization, and get yourself a hot, NY Times Bestseller book deal. Or self-publish. It's a lot easier to do self-publishing these days. Google is your friend. Best of luck! |
