I am going to "rough it" for the next several years of my life
Does anyone have any tips/experience for living outside? Mostly traveling through countryside and cities. I'll need to be able to get enough food and water along with other things like clothing, shelter. I'm bringing a few things with me to start off but wondering how I will survive the next few years.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I couldn't survive without (at a minimum) 4-star room service.

Buy heavy compactor type trash bags.

They are much stronger and thicker mil. for those chilly nights.

Also, they protect your belonging better.

offer a days work for a nights sleep, even in a barn...just leave the farmers daughter alone.

newspaper helps insulate in shoes as well as inside jackets. helps keep the wind out. plastic between will prevent moisture from getting in.

restaurant garbage bins really do have some good food.

follow the rails as many there will share a bit of food and drink and show you ways and places to harbor in a storm.

good luck to ya.

~if you check out campgrounds, you will see many people 'live' there quite well. from primitive to fancy motorhomes. i think we'll see alot of this with the way the economy is going :(

you could see the world, live in the most beautiful places on almost nothing~

do you 'read' people well? do you carry protection?

Get a hand guide to wild edible plants, look for the ones with photo's of the actual plants they are more expensive but much easier to follow.

Oh yeah. I forgot to tell you.

You will very likely become mentally ill from the exhausting experience.

Study your bible and become a prophet.

I did that for awhile - 2 years being homeless - and God/Jesus became alive and real to me but.. I was totally wiggy by normal standards.

Re: I am going to "rough it" for the next several years of my life
come to think of it...under bridges was always pretty good for hunkering down too. lay your plastic down...then layer the papers (pick up from the train stations or in back of publishing houses)...cover with the plastic (with the paper and you in the middle). sort of like a human hot dog. it works and keeps the rain/sleet/snow/wind out.

train stations/bus stations are all pretty good for catching a nap, maybe even a wash up.

a lot of little towns will allow you to stay in their jail for a night if it's stormy...and the donuts are pretty good.

anyway, a bridge usually has others under too that will help you. be careful as they're prepared. ummmm...carry a knife you can reach if needed in a hurry. has to be under 9 inches in most states though to keep it legal.

A BOTA OUTBACK handheld water filtration system is good to have. Filters as you use it....and they are light weight.

Well, good luck to you.

Take plenty of those "wet-wipe" towellettes, and a few "Space Blankets" (very thin, aluminized Mylar, I believe - they'll keep you warm).

Oh, and always wear two pairs of WOOL socks!

what are you good at? what do you do for a living? you can always find people who will help you out simply by asking usually. if you look hungry enough you will be fed. if you look tired enough you will have a bed.

learn to build a fire and keep coals going.
learn which way the wind is blowing and if it means storm or sunshine.

watch for bears/mountain lions/wild dogs/some people. its the people that can be the most dangerous.

how come why are you doing this?

in the very least get set up to back pack it, get a book like the "complete walker" and one on survival , i would think $500 invested in the right gear would keep you alive for years, and a dash of ingenuity

sounds like fun,, might want to get a small pistol

Move south - as far south as you can go. If you live up north you'd best be prepared to winter in homeless shelters as much as possible. If you know how to hunt, keep camp, etc. you can live outside down in the deep south year round. You're going to need occasional money to buy certain supplies that you can't hunt or make, but you can get that money by trading meet and fur. What you're talking about is *technically* possible - but that vast majority of people don't have what it takes to pull it off. Why would you even want to?

BTW - the DNR doesn't take kindly to people squatting on public land, and cops don't take kindly to people who trespass on private property so you had better travel light and constantly stay on the move. Unless you're a modern day Davey Crockett, I'd say you have a better chance of ending up in jail or starving to death than you do of succeeding in your attempt to "rough it" for the next several years. You should probably think up a better plan.

sorry to hear that.
what were you doing as in a job?

heading out without a well thought out plan of being hungry and really having some bad times isn't a good idea.

no jobs where you are? (there are 50,000 vegetable picking jobs open)

I stayed under a few bridges, but found them dangerous, never could relax enough to sleep. I prefer the wilder area's, don't go to deep in, just off the road a little. Learn to make short squat leans. I have used dry leaves stuffed in between two shirts and two pairs of pant as a way of insulating. I also learned a multitude of ways to start a fire. Learning a few string traps can help, most of the time you don't catch much, but occasionally you get lucky. A wild rodent or two can be a great delicacy when you are hungry.

If you do go for it, though, make it pay. Do this;

1) Keep copious notes about everything. Make sure to include lots of "human interest" stories.

2) Buy a few cheapo disposable point-'n-click cameras, and take the best shots you can. Especially of "forgotten" America, and any UFOs you might encounter. And have a cheap little recording device, to capture the accents and attitudes of the "local yokels".

3) A cheap cellphone with a decent camera could be good, too. Set up a MySpace site, and update it regularly from Internet Cafes. You could style yourself as "Wanderin' Guy".

4) After two years or so, return to civilization, and get yourself a hot, NY Times Bestseller book deal. Or self-publish. It's a lot easier to do self-publishing these days. Google is your friend.

Best of luck!

Learn the tin whistle. People will give you money if you're shit at it. Then go buy a hammer and smash open a parking meter or a jewelery store at night. Take that money and buy some crack. Tempt junkies to work for you and become a pimp daddy. With the proceeds of that buy an uzi and a stocking and go forth and rob a bank.

That should get you through a couple of those years.

Further advice given if requested.

one last suggestion, If you do this, know that it is hard to come back.

Society will see you as more of an animal then human, and a part of you begins to believe it. One commenter said you sort of go crazy and I agree.

I would look for other solutions to your problems.
