Thats because the base is used to track the incoming Planet X. Check this with your pendulum.

Re: Michael Palin Visits A US Run South Pole Base
You do not need permission from anyone to land anywhere in the Antarctic, nor do you need passports, visas or any official documentation, the only continent where this is true. Antarctica is owned by no nation and thus no permission is needed to visit.

However, if you want to enter or use any of the US Antarctic facilities you had better have permission from the National Science Foundation, the group thyat administers US Antarctic bases.

The US has had a base at the South Pole since the 1950s. Nothing new there. The buildings have gone through three generations, the first base, called Old Pole, is covered in ice and is quite dangerous to enter, though every winter the winter over crew pays a visit. The second base is a geodesic dome that is being phased out. the latest facility is in the final stages of construction and is a modern, warm, bright building housing living, research and support facilities.

Hope this helps.
