Being a citizen has responsibilities, and some would trade this freedom of dong it themselves for more security where private armies do the dirty work which allows some to shirk their citizenship responsibilities contained in the Constitution. When the highest office of the land has to say a oath about protecting the Constitution, it is also for the citizenry to form state melishas and do their bit to protect their nation as well, not to leave it up to private armies who's only bottom line is the bottom line.

To OP First of all I am an American by birth. I didn't really have a choice in the matter - I was just born an American - just as you were born what ever nationality you are. But that being said, I beleive that having lived with the morals and culture of America has been of great benefit to me. I have traveled the world and have met many people, young and old from many countries. The majority I would choose as friends but there are a few that I didn't care for. I am sure the same could be said about any country and any people of any nation. Why does the world not like Americans? Is it the stereotypical reasons you state. I think not. It is due to America's policies that are determined by our governemnt that are despised. And what can the average American do to change those policies? Nada and zip. I suggest that it is not the average American you are so angry at. It is the fact that the average American has lost the ability to control our government and have them answerable to us. You must resent that the last true light and hope of freedom - America - is fading and you are afraid of what might surface when America's goodness (its people) is no longer able to right the injustices in the world.

We convinced the rest of the world to bankroll our lavish lifestyle. So who are the fools?

The OP used the term "holidaymakers" not "vacationers" as would be the norm in the US. The phrase "Holidaymakers" is probably either Dutch or English (UK) but it is NOT typical of American English nor of someone in France, Germany, or Italy speaking English as a 2nd or 3rd language.

My guess is this is a younger man who ventured here from either The Netherlands or The UK and was shocked when he ran into some of the idiot trailer trash in "middle America" who can't even imagine that there is a world outside of their own little hellish corner with it's own provincial values. Anything different that they are is quickly labeled "evil" or "bad" and they fear it. These are people who have never traveled outside their own state, and out of the country is unimaginable for them. But then so is a college education: most of these people didn't finish High School and most of them are lucky to be making $8/hr at Burger king or McDonalds - yet these idiots are allowed and even encouraged to vote! Oh well.

If indeed you cam here and ran into that - we're sorry. Only the middle states and parts of the south are like that. The rest of the country is pretty decent and much more welcoming of strangers than are those areas.

You have to remember that in the US we have no common ground. No religion, no ethnicity, no shared experience in a joint homeland. We're from everywhere imaginable. Some are rich, some are poor. Many came here and became wealthy thru their own efforts. Others lost everything in coming here but gained their freedom.

We're a hodge podge if ever there was one. A mix of unlike articles of humanity. Yet when the chips are down, we help each other. We will go to the neighbor we don't know and help them save their home from a fire or a storm or a flood. We'll risk out own lives to help save others - and have done so repeated down thru our history. We look at the plack dedicating the statue of liberty to the people of the US and we see it begins with ".... give me your tired, your afraid, your frightened huddled masses" and you know what? We got them and we took them in over generations and we changed those frightened huddled masses into the richest most powerful nation on earth.

Many of us are stupid, and rude, and arrogant. It's true. We think our way is the best or the only way (wrong on both counts of course - but some of us will not learn even from experience.) We are a LONG way from perfect. Our legal system stinks, our tax collection system is a joke, our criminal laws are contradictory and confusing. And we have six hundred million people as citizens of our country occupying a landmass that makes up almost 10% of the world! Our land is HUGE in terms of square miles alone. We cover four time zones in our mainland and two more for Alaska and Hawwai. There are places in this country that you can get in a car and drive straight north or straight west or east and NEVER leave the same state for over three solid days of driving! (Yes, Texas is that big and Alaska is bigger by far!)

We have a great highway system but lousy rail systems. We have beautiful airports in every major city but poor train stations in many of them and no train stations in most of them! Our cheapest land can cost as little as $20/per acre. Our most expensive can cost up to $100,000 per square foot!

You can rent an apartment in NYC for $20,000 per month or you can buy a house in some places in America for that same $20000. We have the best of the rich and the poor. We have art, entertainment, and music. Our movies and Hollywood provide the worlds standard for entertainment. Even our cartoons become hits sometimes!

The Personal Computer was invented here in a garage by Steven Jobs and Steven Wozinak in the late 70's. Today their company has grown into Apple. Bill Gates developed an alternative operating system that grew into Windows and Microsoft. Both are here in our Pacific Northwest. And both make more money than many small countries do!

California - our "Golden State" has an economy that if it were not part of the USA, but were a separate country - would be the 7th largest economy in the world! Bigger than France but not quite as productive as Germany!!

Our cellphone service stinks here compared to Europe. But you don't need as many cell towers to cover the vast expanse of land as we do. It's taken us along time to even approach 40% coverage of our nation. But we're getting there.

We are rich, poor, educated, and not. We do surgery, build computers and dig ditches for a living. We vacation in France on the Rivera or in New York City or Paris. Or we go to grandma's house in upstate NY for Christmas in the snow. Or we stay home and don't vacation at all because we cannot afford to.

We are an amazing bunch of people who have NOT A DAMNED thing in common and who, most of the time, don't like each other very much. But when the chips are down, and push comes to shove - we are Americans and we will fight to the death for our right to exist - messy democracy and failed experiment in humanity that we are. Don't judge us too harshly. We've only been a country for a little over 200 years. We don't have it down completely yet, either. We're still working on it. If some of our people were rude to you, we are sorry. They're rude to us, too if that makes you feel any better. But if you'd only seen the inside of a cheap trailer and had no clothes to wear to school (so you didn't go) most of your life - maybe you'd be rude to outsiders too. Maybe you'd feel like they were staring at you or making fun of your poverty. I don't know. But not all of us are like that - as you found out.Most of us are decent loving kind people. Mistakes? Oh we've made huge ones. The biggest lately was Bush for two terms. How do we apologize to the world for that one? He's destroyed much in eight years and it may tke us eight years to undo it. Germany had their Hitler. We had Bush. At least he didn't manage to start a complete world war = although he tried.

We are now voting much more carefully these days. Our next president should be very different. We hope so, anyway. In closing - come see us again when you're a little more mature and you have a better understanding of what makes human beings tick, too. None of us are all good nor all bad. But it takes a lot of living to finally figure that out for most of us!
