Iran accuses US of nuclear espionage

Iran accuses Washington of spying on the country's nuclear activities in order to produce the controversial NIE published last Monday.

In response to the publication of the US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Tehran had lodged a protest with the Swiss Embassy which has been representing US interests in Iran since the two countries severed diplomatic ties in November 1979.

Mottaki said the Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation over the use of espionage by the US on Iran's nuclear activities.

He strongly rejected the allegations made in the NIE report that Iran was seeking to develop nuclear weapons prior to 2003.

Mottaki said the report included accuracies and inaccuracies, adding that the US held onto its baseless allegations in order to save face.

Iran's Foreign Minister also ruled out the possibility of a military option against the country's nuclear activities noting that all the sides involved in the case had reached the same conclusion.

A recent US intelligence report, NIE conceded that Iran was pursuing a civilian nuclear program.
