Led Zeppelin Reunite Tonight...Can it do anything but suck?
I really, really wish this could be a great thing. On paper, it's momentous. THE Led Zeppelin is reuniting, as complete as they possibly can, and doing a two-hour set!

But wait...haven't I heard Page/Plant reunite in the 90's? Don't I remember hearing a very croaky, cracky Robert Plant talk his way through the high notes...and miss most of them?

For that matter, haven't I seen them Reunite in the 80's for Live Aid and sounding like absolute ass?

I'm getting nervous. Maybe, just maybe, I can dust off some bootlegs and hear how great they were live in their heyday. Maybe Robert Plant will channel his original muse and shine, just for one night, pumped up full of steroids and vitamin shots and take oxygen every four seconds.

Well, it would seem after listening to boots and BBC sessions and Song Remains the Same...Zeppelin has almost always sucked live. Robert Plant ALWAYS disappoints. He seems to enjoy disappointing people and cashing in on his legacy without any effort at all on his part.

My prediction: There will be no magic today at the Led Zeppelin reunion, only frustration and the reminder that you can't go home again.

Well, at least one of them is dead, and the rest are burned-out druggies/drinkers in their early sixties, so YEAH!

It can't possibly do anything but SUCK RHINO BALLS!

Disclaimer: I never liked Led Zeppelin (or the Beatles, or the Who - some Rolling Stones was good, I was more into Cream, Beefheart and Zappa at that time).

Probably right, Greg. I was into Led Z in '69 & '70 before the High School kids found their latest fad. Plant never could sign live, but then I saw a YouTube video from '78 (I think) and he didn't sound bad at all. Page tries to overplay everything and usually does, but Page is Page so nothing new there. He is a studio genius, no doubt about it. No Bonham, no real Led Zep. It's like the Who without Moonie.

what makes no sense to me is why they decided on the O2 arena.. if they had it at wembley, SO many more people would be able to see them play!

and they would fill it up to capacity no problem!

they wanted the tickets to be more valuable
that is why they chose a more intimate venue

led zeppelin were technically perfect in the studio.

their live shows were inspired and spontaneous.

some people would say sloppy but they never tried to sound just like the record.

each show was intimate and unique which made it all the more special.

glad I got to see page and plant a few years back

I can't make the new show

Re: Led Zeppelin Reunite Tonight...Can it do anything but suck?
Well, I've seen some clips of several songs from the show, and I must say that I stand corrected.

Led Zep delivered!

However, I'm not completely convinced that there wasn't a great deal of trickery going on.

1st: Zep definately "took it down a couple" to make things easier on Plant. Plant, to his credit, tried to go for some high notes in this range.

2nd: On Plant: Over the years, it is a certainty that Plant can't sing very well anymore. He cracks, he croaks, he talks his way through songs, and he's raspy where he used to be powerful. Somehow, he was pretty smooth this night. Did they can a performance, edit it, and mime the whole thing? I can't say for sure, and there were punches pulled, but I didn't hear anything as bad as some of the stuff I've heard in the past, on boots and even "NO Quarter" the Unledded thing. I smell a cleaned up "safe" performance.

As for Page, I can't say. Stairway was missing a lot of the frilly fills he used to do live. No real complaint here, just an observation. The song remains intact.

Whatever is going on, it is very, very exciting to be a fully-formed adult human being in a time where Led Zeppelin is a working band.

And for the "It's not Zep without Bonzo" homos...WHATEVER. IT's his son, at least. Inherited Legacy is good enough for me.

Good stuff.

How about a new album with even more trickery to get Plant rocking again and wipe clean the suffering that was "Walking In to Clarksdale"?

I would have gone to see it if i had a ticket.. but having said that, i really hope they don't do a world tour as its been rumoured..

Leave the past where it belongs. No one will ever forget Zeppelin. Why take the risk of damaging an already perfect image.

Plant never could sing live? You my man are an idiot. Ever listen to the BBC sessions? At least he was never an Internet hack.
