why was a religious holiday for one religion declared a national holiday by the government? why aren't the major holidays of other religions declared national holidays in the USA?

Probably after Dickens sanatized it... It was outlawed at one point, but Christmas in the 1700's is *NOTHING* like it was in the mid to late 1800's.

It was more like Mardi Gras, with public drunken singing for Wassal...
"I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

The first five congressionally designated federal holidays were New Year’s Day, George Washington’s Birthday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Approved in the 1870s, they were applicable only to federal employees in the District of Columbia. In 1885, Congress began to extend holiday coverage to federal employees outside Washington.
