Why do men hate patchouli oil so much?

´cause it smells like dirt.

I´m a female, and I have to admit that I hate the smell of patchouli too...

I love the smell of patchouli

Overpowering any natural scent. Was used to cover the smell of weed in the old days. But, the law started cueing in on it and it began to cause "strip search city" if they even got a wiff of that smell. A lot of us "freaks" began to run like hell if we caught a wiff of it too!

It´s a bit heavy and headachy. Ever tried Ma Griffe by Carven? Light and citrusy.

Everybody´s different...genetically. Some people might detect notes of vinegar mixed in with florals, mildew and fresh earth with patchouli, others might smell ash and florals, and others might only smell a floral earthy aroma.

I still have an old LP that smells of it from like 35 years ago!!!

I believe that is my all-time favorite song. Thanks for the reminder. I, btw, am a man and I love patchouli. Many steamy-low, streaming-high memories of a few beautiful ladies and all the fragrances.

Depends on the variety. Some kinds do smell like dirt. Others have a nice scent. Really, it depends on the person wearing it and how well their body chemistry brings out the undertones.

Patchouli smells different on different people depending on the chemistry. On the wrong person worn too strong or the wrong blend it can be atrocious but on the right person it can be very sexy.

I have a blend with vanilla in it and it is toned down. The vanilla really smooths and enhances the earthy tones. It smells sultry.

Its a love it or hate it deal

it is about ´degree´ as its a potent fragrance

my best friends, a married couple both love the stuff and have a complete shower line: soap, oil, lotion. They bathe together and drench in it and say it makes their boudoir smell heavenly

Agree. I usually take a swig or two of the boy´s beer before bed so we smell and taste the same.

Men are turned off by any stronge perfumy sweet scent. Why is that women believe that men like their stinky perfumes?

the worst is when you have to take public transportation in the morning and you have that fat lady that weir 2 litre of her expensive cologne.

I started a ruckuss in a bus because one of those perfume lady.

Get real, perfume stink.

I much rather have a slight smell of, lets say the soap "Dove" then the friggin tommy figer.

Its very earthy and grounding ..
and yes use all scents spareingly it should accent not overpower your natural scent..
As a male I like Myrrh as a base for scents its a little more uplifting ..
If your a female try something more like Rose , Lavender or Jasmine they are much more sensual..

To me, patchouli is one of the most offensive odors I´ve ever smelled. I rank it with noxious dog farts and the body odor of an unbathed 300 lb behemoth.
The reason I find it so disgusting is because it´s unavoidable ... when someone is wearing it, the smell is like a tidal wave that washes over you, not to mention that it just isn´t an attractive "scent" if one could be so generous to call something that foul a scent at all. When someone wears it the first thing that comes to mind is that they are filthy and feebly using it as a mask to cover the unwashed odors of their dirty body. If I´m somewhere like an airplane and the person sitting next to me farts, I´d probably thank god that it was only a fart. At least that goes away, patchouli lingers like a dark raincloud.

Because it STINKS! Smells like mold & dirt.

It´s aggressive, too...it goes 10 feet ahead of & behind the wearer, assaulting people´s noses.

Dump the soaps and crap...

Stick to the straight essential oil...Make sure there are no additives...Less is always more with patchouli...A 2 gram bottle should last 10 years...It does not blend with every body...Those that it blends well with are usually nymphs and satyrs though... ;-)

I love it also, but not all patchouli oil smells good. There used to be a shop on The Ave in Seattle that had maybe 10 different kinds, and only one smelled good to me.
It is overpowering though. I get unscented soap to melt down and scent and then pout into molds. For 4 bars of soap I usually use about 10-15 drops of patchouli and the same amount of clove or cinnamon oil. That way you only get a faint hint of patchouli, and not enough to make people choke when they´re near you.
