NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
My son turns 20 on Christmas Eve and is addicted to smoking. My wish is that he would quit, but since he has tried several times and not been successful I would rather see him smoke natural tobacco rather than commercially produced cigarettes. My hope is that natural tobacco it is not as harmful.

I do not smoke and do not know anything about rolling your own cigarettes. I would appreciate any advice from those out in GLP-land who roll their own as to what type of equipment to buy and where to get it on the Internet. I am thinking of getting him a setup to roll his own for Christmas/B-Day.

Thanks!

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
When I smoked, I rolled cigarettes and used natural tobacco with the brand name, "American Spirit," but studies have shown that natural tobaccos are not safer and may actually pose more of a health risk than the chemically treated kind.

[link to faculty.washington.edu]

I used a rolling machine for filter tubes that I bought in a local smoke shop. The machines are under ten dollars and a box of 100 filter tubes is under five dollars. An ounce of loose tobacco is under five dollars.

Edit: it is less expensive to buy and roll loose tobacco.

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
From what I understand, smoking is really not that bad for you. I read that Edgar Cayce even recommended a few smokes a day.

The problem has become the ingredient of the cigarttes and the materials used to make them. The filters are riddled with synthetic fibers, the paper is certainly not as clean or even as beneficial as it could be (why not use tobacco leaves to roll the cigarette in) and I also read that there are some 400+ different additives from rat hair to dirt to cayan pepper and heaven knows what else is mixed with the tobacco for different reasons, burn, flavor, smoke color and many other unimaginable reasons.

Even smoking a cigar is better than smoking a cigarette. The cigar is "all tobacco", even the wrapper is a tabacco leaf.

Iīm not hard headed though, smoking a pack of cigarettes is bad for you but I donīt think smoking a cigar or two or a hand rolled cigarette of good clean tobacco will kill anybody or even give them cancer or even get you sick. Light em up.

Go to a tobacco shop. Get him a nice rolling machine. Ask the tobacanist what he would recomend as far as a good naturally grown tobaco goes. Find out your sons brand of smoke and ask him with tobaco comes close to it in flavor.
You can get a machine that will either roll a cigarette with a filter or without or both.

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
Sarafina-

My husband rolls his own and only uses additive-free, all natural tobacco. Since he has been doing this he never coughs like he did, feels much healthier in general and never gets winded. No more wheezing when he lays down either. He is 33 and has been smoking since he was about 13.

There are many many places to buy all natural tobaccos, including the net. I recommend Pure Natural and to buy it by the pound. The ONLY cig. machine I would ever recommend is the Supermatic II by the Clinton Tube Co. Nothing else makes smokable cigs. It is rather expensive at about $40-45, but it lasts a long time. Only use Premier tubes as they are made specifically for the Supermatic machines.

All in all, my husband spends about $25 a month on smoking.

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
I rolled for ten years after "tailor-mades" became too expensive. One of the beauties of rolling is the ritual of rolling -and rolling well. One eventually becomes good enough to roll a perfect cigarette in seconds. Machines that add filters are a bad joke -addicts only smoke more to get the required fix.

High quality tobacco -Camel quality- is available very cheaply. That is the problem. I smoked heavily for about a dollar per day, which would have cost me about $10 for packaged cigs here in CA. Major tobacco companies make quality tobacco available (through subsidiaries) very cheaply because they know most people come back to packaged brands after tight financial times.

I would not, AT ALL, encourage your son to roll. It is like providing free heroin to an addict. I finally quit smoking 3 years ago after 40 years of heavy smoking. I quit because my lungs were wheezing 24 hours a day. Many die before that point. Lungs are clear now but lung cancer is never far away.

if your son is smoking cigaretes and is 20 he probably rolls something else too! so he has "equipment". i mean donīt you need to be on drugs to become a smoker nowadays.

There are really benefits to nicotine that are not talked about, one it is a great antidepressant and another is itīs ability to twart off alzeimers type conditions.

There was some musing about this about a month ago, and if I can find the link to the source, I will post it.

Itīs the zillions of other chemicals in cigarettes that make them bad, the ones man put in them, not God.

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
Drum brand tobacco, and HAND roll īem. You can smoke less and save money by not buying a machine or those stupid tubes. And they taste way better than american spirit. Sure it make a while to get the hang of it, but your so much cooler twisting one by hand, and you are in more control, you can roll a thin one if that is all you want. For example the pack comes with 50 papers, I usually get about 225-250 smokes out of that much tobacco, and cool chicks ask for a "Drum" almost every time I whip out the pack.
This is the way, my friend, trust me.

Thanks for all your replies.

AC 4:46 – LOL – ok, I corrected my bad spelling….

Luna-PYX – thank-you – I was hoping to hear from someone who actually used a rolling machine and had one they liked.

AC 5:17 – yea, I am wrestling with the idea that I am encouraging and condoning his habit. I do not, but he is an adult and is making his own decisions now about his lifestyle. He has heard my lectures and smoking killed my Mom, so it isn’t like he hasn’t been warned.

Paranoid eyes – yes, my son has smoked pot, but he does not smoke it regularly or I would smell it (he lives with me). I do not smoke so my nose is sensitive to ‘smoke’ smells and pot has a distinctive smell.

Lung cancer frequently strikes young smokers. Most people do not realize that tobacco smoke is somewhat radioactive --no BS. It only takes a single cell being mutated by a radioactive emission to get the cancer ball rolling. You should try to wake your son up before itīs too late. Believe me, it only gets more difficult to quit as one gets older. I crave tobacco smoke every day. Not fun.

Get him a rolling mat.

[link to www.weedcity.com]

Thatīs just like the one I used to have, before it wore out :) Pure coincidence that it turned up in a google search, I got it in the Danish version of weedcity, an inner-Copenhagen freehaven made by ex-hippies before our government shut it down here just last year... I got some funny looks in restaurants, one or two even told me "not here", lol, before I explained that it was just normal tobacco.

That is of course, if he doesnīt want to quit, which is probably the best bet. Iīve been smoking for 4 years now, started when I was 21, and it really is just a bad habit.

Machines are very uncool though :P You gotta roll your own, either do it in hand (takes a lot of practice) or get a mat.

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
Sarafina,

I guess that either donīt start, or stop smoking if you can is the best advice. A decent American hand rolling tobacco is Single Stick available for about $14 per one pound bag in California. As for a machine forget it he should learn to hand roll. It is a bit like riding a bike, tricky at first but dead easy once you get the hang of it. He should use filters because they are better health wise.
Packet cigs in the USA have way, way to much sulfur in them to make them burn quickly and it is not good for you.

Single Stick means (I think) that the tobacco in the packet is all, or mainly from a single plant.
All in all a bit less harmful than cigs and defiantly a LOT cheaper. He will need to experment with diffrent brands of cig papers to find what he likes, some do not gum up well and tend to fall apart which is quite annoying. Then buy em by the box because a pack at a time is expensive.stoner

Re: NEED ADVICE From Those Who Roll Their Own Cigarettes
iīm canadian

We have a big tobacco company, RJR MacDonald Tobacco. WHile going to school a few years back, my route would take me to pass right beside this ciggie making company. One could smell the tobacco leaves drying for miles around, the school was right in front of it.

Several times, iīve seen white unlabelled tanker trucks unfuelling whatever chems they were carrying to this company. At first I thought, Hey, how come I cannot see a damned label on those trucks? Ainīt it illegal to drive around an unlabelled tanker truck?

Got me thinking a lot...

Now, iīm on Natives ciggies, get them on the indian reserve, tax free. Iīve also noticed about those cigarets that they burn a lot longer than any other brand of commercials one iīve ever bought which means, no accelerant chem to make it burn even and fast.

I roll my own with a little machine i use to load the tobacco. About ten dollars a carton.

Only one of my five children took up smoking, and thank god quit after a couple of years.

My advice to you is, let your feelings be known in the most strongest terms possible.

Stop now.....please stop now.

So why are we already on the second page of this thread and noone has told this accomodating parent about the "Dollar bill" method?

You put the...err...uh...the cigarette wrapper with a modest amount of...err...uh...tobacco, slightly cupped in isde a dollar bill.

You then roll the dollar bill back and forth to tighten the ingredients...yea, that sounds better...the ingredients to the desired tightness.

when you want to get the paper to tuck into itself you apply a little different pressure with your fingers...

And VOILA, you gots a nice even smoke.

Donīt forget to clean the seeds and stems out first!

wink
