OP is sooo right. The sexual drive is the one thing that keeps us from evolving spiritually. Why do you think the repys programmed us with it when they began their breeding experiments.

First you must consider the purpose of LIFE. Why are we here and the same answer applies to all humans - to evolve is the only answer. Taking that into consideration takes you to Sex - what is its purpose - to reproduce when the appropriate moments arises. In times past in the Dow system of the east the ruling cast would never lose essence except to produce a child. So there you have it - you are here with free will to do as you choose for as many lifetimes as it takes to get it. It is not easy but it can be done and it starts with the thoughts - you must control the thoughts to start with then it becomes second nature. The essence that is within you is for a specific purpose and not to be wasted. We all have free will to do as we please.

Spiritual growth is bullshit. You will always be subject to human limitations even after death. However the path you choose makes a difference. If you see sex as a positive thing then it is no longer a problem. Some people worry night and day about the weeds that come up in their yard. Their life is wasted fighting the weeds. I watch the weeds grow and mow them off. I accept the weeds. The weeds can be a positive thing.

You will always have the opportunity to be an inferior man or woman who is ruled by the animal part of your being and continuously manipulated by base desires.

I might just add some words of encouragement, I still have some difficulty with the SEX thing after more than 20 years, it does not happen overnight, it takes time and practice. The worst thing is to worry about it and judge yourself over it, you are only human and there are more distractions than encouragement. Once you set your mind to the task know that you can do it as others have before us. Thinking of something brings it to us so best to think of other things. Its not a matter to remove it but transform it to its rightfull place. That short feeling of bliss that comes with sex is but a preview of the potential that is ahead.

Yes you must eliminate sexual desire for a complete union with God, whatever religion you may believe in. I am a Hindu, and we have a saying, Rama (whom the Hindus believe to be an incarnation of God) is not there where lust lasts. You can do it by following ways.

1. Try yoga. Emphasize on Mulabandha Mudra, and Uddiyanbandha Mudra. Get yourself a guru for these.

2. Have faith on whom you worship - God, Allah, Krishna, whoever. Sex urges hinder the paths of even greatest saints so don't give up even after repeated failures. Just pray so that God takes it off. Don't complain to much. Don't give much attention to it, or it will increase. Don't lower your vision to sex; look above!

3. When you feel an urge, remove the object of the urge or leave the place. Without the object, your urge will not normally last more than five minutes. Gently tell your mind that you are not going to succumb to lust a few times, then simply concentrate on another thing. Remember, don't linger back to the thought and most importantly don't try to fight too much with the urge. Just, casually move to some other work. Do any or all of these things if possible -

If outside home - take a stroll / watch people in the street / sit somewhere and look up at the sky

If at home - Take one or two glasses of water / take a fruit / breathe long for 20-25 times / Sit in the above mentioned yoga postures / Take any spiritual book and read some paragraphs / sing a carol or chant a prayer in low voice / feel that you are the boss of your mind and sex urge is not going to overpower you.

why would you want to do that? Spiritual growth and sexual desire go hand in hand. The way to really grow is through interaction and putting yourself through situations that push your buttons. Sex is great, just don't let the mundane things women are interested in distract you too much.

this does not eliminate the desire, it extends the desire out for a timeperiod which is virtually indefinite up to the point of the actual orgasm. Quite satisfying.
