My wife had her hair falling out from taking high blood pressure meds, which also had adverse side effects. Another person advised her they 'do that' . She stopped, and when she went to doctor, everything was FINE. She didn't tell him she stopped and he thought it was the drugs. She is SO whimpy, she would NEVER tell someone in an elevator they were standing on her FOOT, let alone tell the doctor he's NUTS ! Eagle |

My previous doctor died in 1997 but I never went to him much back then either....only for really bad colds which are much less frequent now that I don't go to any doctors or dentists for that matter. And I don't take prescription drugs. I shun even ibuprofen and rarely take even an aspirin. Very rarely I will take a benidryl if i break out in hives. Anonymous Coward User ID: 354825 United Kingdom 01/13/2008 01:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Tens of thousands of good medicos know millions of Citizens have been indirectly murdred or maimed -- Here's a good website from a reinsurance company, TransAmerica. They have a vested interest in people LIVING and not dying. The article is about cholesterol and the elderly. Laboratory Findings in the Elderly - What's Normal? Cholesterol Total cholesterol is a well-known risk factor for atherosclerotic heart disease in middle-aged adults. The ratio of total cholesterol to the "good cholesterol" fraction, high density lipoprotein (HDL), is an even stronger predictor of heart disease, especially in some subsets, such as women and diabetics. The effects of total cholesterol and cholesterol / HDL ratio are less clear in old age however. The Leiden 85-Plus Study followed 724 very elderly people for ten years and found, not surprisingly, that half of all deaths in the group were due to heart disease. This would be expected merely by the very high prevalence of ischemic heart disease in this age group. However, total cholesterol levels did not predict who would die of heart disease. In fact, for every 1 mmol/L increase in total cholesterol, there was a 15% decrease in mortality. Total cholesterol levels, when they were low, did help to predict those people who died of cancer and infection though, as they do in younger adults. The important difference in using cholesterol to assess risk in the elderly is simply this: higher levels are associated with increased longevity, not mortality. Several studies have shown this correlation. In most insurance companies, preferred and standard rating guidelines often depend upon cholesterol test results. Typically the higher the cholesterol level the higher the rating. In the elderly this doesn't make a great deal of sense. As discussed above, the mortality risk at older ages correlates with low rather than high levels of cholesterol. In the absence of cholesterol lowering drugs, total cholesterol levels of less than 150 should prompt a search for other evidence of disease or "failure to thrive," the geriatric syndrome of gradual decline and loss of functional ability that frequently heralds serious or chronic diseases. ------------------ ^^^"Mortality risk at older ages correlates with LOW rather than HIGH levels of cholesterol." Reality is a bitch! yeah... that reminds me of when i went to the doc for migraines. he asked me a few questions, and then wrote me a perscription for Imitrex, gave me a few samples of the product, and told me to try a peice of candy when i first get migraines... if that didn't work, use the pill. he didn't talk to me about the side effects of the drug, nor did he discuss medication interactions... Later that day, as i always do with substances i might be taking, i researched the hell out of it. Mortality due to acute myocardial infarction or stroke was significantly lower in persons taking statin drugs.2 These drugs have also been credited with attenuating cardiac remodeling and protecting patients with CHF from death.3–5 Statin therapy inhibits and decreases levels of inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF-], interleukin [IL-6]), increases nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, normalizes autonomic functions, and reverses pathological myocardial remodeling.6–10 While statins increase the bioavailability of NO, a powerful vasodilator, statins also decrease the synthesis and reduce the levels of endothelin, a powerful vasoconstrictor in endothelial cells.11 |
