A 30-year-old man is now charged after a huge explosion on his property prompted authorities to put the Prairie Island nuclear plant a mile away on alert.

Goodhue County prosecutors charged Brian Wesley Childs with gross disregard for human life and several lesser charges.

Childs was released from jail without bail.

The attorney for a man charged with three felonies related to a huge explosion on his property in Goodhue County says he will fight the charges.

Prosecutors claim Childs bought 100 pounds of the explosive Tannerite off the Internet. The explosive was loaded into the rear end of a dump truck on Sunday and detonated by a .50-caliber rifle round.

Childs' attorney, Joseph Paiement, says he plans to file motions to dismiss the charges before a February 22nd hearing.

Paiement says he think the incident was, quote, "over-charged."

Childs told investigators he blew up a heavy duty metal dump box from an old dump truck with one hundred pounds of explosives he purchased from an internet website. "He realizes it was a foolish mistake, and I don't think this will happen again," said his father Alan Childs after the court proceeding.

Authorities released a home videotape of the blast, shot by a friend of Childs. A group of men is heard on the tape laughing before a rifle shot imploded the device. Huge hunks of metal flew through the air, some landing as far as a quarter mile away. After the blast, the men could be heard hooting and hollering as smoke and debris rained from the sky.

News of the explosion traveled fast, from the streets of Red Wing to federal agencies in Washington D-C. Sheriff's investigators and Childs' family say the high alert it set off at the nearby Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant created interest, as did the fact he purchased the explosive compound from an internet website. "Our phone rang 24 hours a day over the last few days, we're surprised at how it's been blown so far out of proportion," reflected Alan Childs. "Truly it is because of the times we live in, I think the media attention that got everybody. Maybe Americans are a little bit fearful of anything that happens, and I think we have to get over that."

For his part, Brian Childs was simply glad to be out of jail. When asked if he was surprised his extreme stunt had become such big news, he replied "Yeah, just for having a little fun."
