Chess genius Bobby Fischer dies in Iceland

Fri Jan 18, 2008 8:53am EST

By Kristin Arna Bragadottir

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Bobby Fischer, America's first and only world chess champion, who beat the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky in a blaze of Cold War publicity in Reykjavik in 1972, has died in Iceland at the age of 64.

A spokesman for Fischer, who was feted as a national hero for beating Spassky but fell foul of U.S. authorities in his later years, confirmed that the eccentric chess genius had died but offered no further details.

Rumors that Fischer, once dubbed the "Mozart of Chess", had been ill had circulated in recent weeks on chess-related Web sites. Iceland national radio reported he had died after a serious, but unspecified, illness.

Fischer, a child prodigy who once said he liked to watch his opponents squirm and who had become an Icelandic citizen, could have faced jail in the United States for violating sanctions on former Yugoslavia by playing a chess match there with Spassky.

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov hailed Fischer as "the pioneer and the father of professional chess".

Kasparov said he had followed the 1972 clash of the U.S. and Soviet titans closely. "Fischer's chess was so fresh and so new and we all grew up under the strongest impression of Fischer's victories," he told Sky News television.

"From an ideological stance it was the fight of an individual against a totalitarian system. He had a lot of supporters even in the Soviet Union. No one viewed him as an American fighting Soviets, it was more a great man fighting the mighty machine," Kasparov said.

Spassky, who now lives in Paris, was less eloquent on the subject of his old adversary. Asked by Reuters for his reaction, he replied: "It's bad luck for you. Bobby Fischer is dead," then hung up without further comment.

Interesting to see that the last email sent to him that he has put on his website was involving GLP and a post with an ironic title made by my alter ego Mullah Tachik0ma.

from the Reuters link

"As Fischer's fame grew, his temperament became more unpredictable. He walked out of tournaments because of what he considered to be bad lighting or bad air conditioning. He refused to play matches on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath."

God bless Bobby Fischer.

We who are actually strong tournament players or former players, feel deeply embarrassed by Fischer's anti-American, anti-semitic rants he engaged in over the last three decades. He gave chess a black eye in the view of the general public.

He was filled with hatred as well as VERY close to being insane.

Sadly, it COULD have been different. he COULD HAVE been an ambassador of chess to schoolchildren, he COULD HAVE helped popularize "speed chess" on TV, to generate exciting sporting play, and perhaps big money.

But instead, he chose the path of being a recluse, a hater, and as always, indifferent to the needs of anyone but himself.

Having said that, at least in 1972, he was a genuine American hero, having defeated the Soviet "machine" which churned out grandmaster players starting with early lessons in childhood.

Some of what he accomplished will NEVER be repeated, as in qualifying candidates tournaments, he went 6-0 against GM Bent Larsen, 6-0 against GM Mark Taimanov, and even 6 1/2 - 2 1/2 ( I think ) against Super GM Tigran Petrosian, who at the time, was considered almost impossible to beat.

To score 18 1/2 - 2 1/2 against top grandmasters was unheard of , and still is.

He was hounded and harassed mercilessly by the authorities.

He didn't give chess a black eye, the nazi gestapo authorities gave it a black eye by hounding him.

He fought back. Which is more than can be said for most people.

Bobby Fischer continued the fight against totalitarian systems until his death. This is why the U.S. wanted to jail and silence him, attempting to extradite him from Japan, after which he fled to Iceland.

Actually no, that is NOT why U.S. authorities wanted to arrest him. He violated sanctions against the then-Yugoslavia.

Whether you agree with those sanctions or not, THAT is why they were after Fischer.

Do NOT distort history.

It had nothing to do with Fischer " fighting against totalitarian systems".

Yup.

[link to www.guardian.co.uk]

It came as a great surprise in 1992 when a Fischer v Spassky rematch was announced, 20 years after Reykjavik. Both needed the money, and the terms were astonishingly generous, $3.3m for the winner and $1.6m for the loser. Spassky, who had quit Russia for France, was ranked 99th in the world, while Fischer had stopped serious chess study for a decade. The venue was Yugoslavia, then subject to UN sanctions, and the sponsor was a banker, Jedzimir Vasiljevic, who ran a pyramid operation with high interest rates and was suspected of financing Belgrade's arms deals. At the opening press conference Fischer spat on a US government letter warning him of imprisonment and a fine if he played the match, and launched a diatribe against the alleged game fixing by Kasparov and Karpov.

There was still immense interest on how he would perform after a 20-year break, by far the longest absence from the game by any world champion. He began with an impressive win, but then dropped behind with two feeble losses and rumours began that he would quit. At this point Spassky, with his retirement payday threatened, lost twice by poor defence and blunders. After 30 games, Fischer won 10-5 with 15 draws, showing occasional flashes of his great years, but more often the tired strategies of a player well past his best. Both ex-champions received their prize money and transferred it from Vasiljevic's bank, which collapsed a few months later.

With a warrant out for his arrest, Bobby could not return to California. He took up residence in Budapest...

He was a Seventh Day Adventist or some similar Christian sect that considered Saturday the Sabbath. This played holy hell with chess tournament schedules, which frequently have matches on Saturdays.

FISCHER had a jewish mother and was born a (good)jew,
however, he disavowed his jewish roots when he questioned

the jewish hirearchy involved in the worldwide attrocities again humankind.

Exposing criminal jewish powers of the International banking cabal (rothschild, schief, etc...) he placed
himself at deadly odds with these psycopaths.

He is a hero for taking such a stand and I personally admire this HERO for daring to show us all the truth.

Obviously, Shill, if Fischer was kissing up to the PTB and had kept his mouth shut, U.S. authorities would have overlooked his indiscretion in playing in Yugoslavia.

They would not have still been trying to get Bobby extradited from Japan 15 years later!!!
