This incident reminds me of the whole Jim Webb handgun fiasco a few months back. Methinks that this guy will not be given the same leniency that Senator Webb received in connection with a firearm violation. So much for equal protection of the laws. Also, at least until the Supreme Court strikes down DC's silly (and unconstitutional gun laws), it is not illegal to possess a long-gun (i.e., shotgun or rifle) in D.C. BUT it must be registered with the police department. Thus, this guy is screwed, unless, of course, your name is Senator Jim Webb and the Capital Police decide not to enforce the law.

PEOPLE! What we should be asking ourselves and the D.C. local government is why do the police have guns?!?! It's supposed to be illegal to own a firearm in D.C. If that is truly the case, and the citizens are being lorded over and controlled properly by this law, then what is the need for the police to be armed? If the whole point of the law is to rid the district of ALL FIREARMS (and it must be working because it's still a law), then no one should have these horrible people killing devices. Why do the police feel it's necessary to have firearms? To control an unarmed populace by armed force? YEP, THAT MAKES SENSE.

Long rifles and shotguns are only legal in the District if they are stored broken-down in your residence. You cannot open carry any firearm in our Nation's Capital. The District is not shall-issue, and the law prohibits private citizens from carrying any firearm or even knives over a certain length in Washington. It is probably the most screwed-up place on the planet. There are shootings all the time in DC, which should be impossible, what with no guns and all! Even stranger: DC Park Police is responsible for the GW Parkway, which stays in Virginia, but goes past DC. It is technically illegal to even travel from McLean or Fairfax into Alexandria via the GW Parkway, though I don't know if anyone has ever challenged that. I was also told that DC Metro doesn't care if you are on a peaceable journey, and that they will jail you and confiscate firearms you are traveling with if you tell them that they are present. The Bush administration is nothing more than the usual nannys we get in the White House, disarming the populace and refusing to adhere to the laws of the land.
