A monitor of that size has to be at more distance from your eyes, I have a 19 inch at the distance you have yours.

24" is way too big

Conventionally, TVs were no bigger than 25" in the good ole days and they were in the living room while one watched from the couch.

I am a part-time graphic designer..which is why the big monitor.

But, yeah, it is just too much. I feel like I am being microwaved.

Eye strain = nausea.

It should have defaulted to 85hz or higher...

If it's lower, like 60hz, that will definitely screw with you...

Don't know if they still do, but used to be radiation came from your computer monitor. They have radiation filters. I had to get one because sitting in front of a computer monitor made my hair fall out. (Thyroid was affected.)

I agree, the refresh need to be high to avoid that flickering that get your nervous system even if you dont notice it 85Hz is the best but 100 is even better if the monitor support it.

I can't use a computer without an anti-glare, anti-radiation screen over the monitor. It used to be worse with the older monitors, less worse now with the flat screens but I still need the protection. I also wear some thingy around my neck that I've had for years and just found it again in the bottom of a drawer, I forget the name of it.

Yup. I also bought a new LCD monitor--19"--and it also made me sick.

I reset the 'refresh' rate but it didn't help.

I thought it was a defective monitor so I returned it and got a different brand....it didn't help, I still felt sick/dizzy after only a short while.

Thank god I had a spare CRT monitor, new in the box, and now i have no problems.

I think LCDs are safer. Think about it. With a CRT you have a gun shooting electrons at the back of the screen to light up the phosphers. If the phosphurs don't grab the electrons then they just keep on going and slam into your pumpkin head and sensitive eyeballs.
While the LCD is just a light emiting diode and some coloring. No electrons shooting into your poor pea sized brain.

Are you serious? That is really weird because my mum thinks my computer is making me unwell.. I have a cold at the moment and I constantly get coldsores. I recently went to a doctor and he told me my thyroid gland was swollen. So now after reading your message I'm a bit freaked out.

Granted, that one is too small for your 24"... its also made for CRT's, but you get the general idea... you can find them for HD/LCD, I think

Nothing wrong with my LCD monitor I bought, although the refresh rate is the same as my old 17" cathode monitor. So if it is making you all of that, it is probably the refresh rate. I have gotten use to mine, but I had a 19" old monitor that is fuzzy, so the LCD just works better anyway. So, sorry to say that if it is the refresh rate doing that running only at 60Hz, then the highest resolution you can have at the 75Hz refresh rate (and I looked at quite a few monitors before I bought mine - just a cheap one- because all of them were the same on refresh rate -which suprised me - only being the same as an old 17" monitor) is 1152 x 864. If you go up to 1280 x 960 then you will switch automatically over to 60 Hz refresh rate.

At first you will have to mess around with the controls on your monitor. I have got my monitor so I can use it. When it starts setting the Brightness to 100, it has to pretty bright in the room to begin with. Since my room is darker I am right now at night at 25 brightness. During the day I set it to 30. Now the contrast I use to run on my old monitor up high is only on 60. I use to set it higher or lower, but after awhile it stays at 60.

It will take some time for your eyes to adjust, but right now for the most part, if my eyes get strained by the refresh rate, I can use a lower resolution. It will take some time for your eyes to adjust to it so stick with it. I rather have my 19" monitor working but actually it is not all that much better although the refresh rate could go higher if the video card of your computer can handle it. I found out that after awhile with the LCD it works fine and I have gotten use to it. And right now, if I had to stretch my screen all the way across I can but still be only at say 1600 x 1200 resolution. I do not care for the 1920 x 1200 resolution because the characters are not formed enough to be enough like a person might just use bold characters all the time, but that does not really work at that resolution. It is great to watch some DVD's on it at that resolution but if necessary, I can stretch my screen at the 1600 x 1200 resolution all the way across and the characters looked more formed than at the higher resolution.

It takes a more expensive monitor actually to make it better. The problem is that people do not want to pay that much for a monitor. But as I said, and it took awhile, my eyes have gotten use to it. So that is all I can say. And for getting more space on the desktop of the screen stretching the picture all the way across can be done. I am not doing that now, but again, it is so big watching a DVD movie that I just use it at normal setting of 1280 x 960 right now. If I get back to doing some work the resolution will be set to 1600 x 1200. Anyway the games I play look fine on it, and the eyeballs will get use to it.

And yes, at first it was terrible and I always wanted to adjust the screen. It just did not look right. But if you do not look at another monitor then your eyes will adjust.

Some games I play there. If you want anything better, they just do not make it, because no one wanted to pay for it. It would be too expensive for most people so the sort of minimum won. Your eyeballs will adjust.

And it may cost the same to fix my old 19" monitor that only worked about good a year or so, which was really disappointing because afterall, nothing to me is really what I want - and that was the refresh rate my CRT monitor had. But again, if it is refresh rate, you have to go lower in resolution to 1152 x 864, or 1024 x 768. But that will be so big on that monitor that you will need your computer and keyboard like 7 feet away. I sit around 2 feet away and that will be where my eyeballs to the screen always will be.

The movies really look good though so I can live with it.

Sorry for rattling on about the LCD monitor as it will take your eyes a while to adjust. But for glare, the old CRT monitor (glass) is much worse. I am partial also to glare, and I actually think that is why LCD is better. There really is no glare on one of them, compared to my old glass CRT monitor. It just takes a while for the eyes to adjust to it though. Turn down the Brightness and the Contrast and try that. Way less then perhaps you would be use to on a monitor.

Well, I am done rattling about it.

I changed the color settings for the red, green blue although 50, 50, 50 is I think the default(?). I went down for awhile to (42, 36, 40 for the color) now up a little to 52 for red, 46 for green, and 50 for blue, sort of like the hot setting (9300K temperature setting) on an old CRT monitor but much lower (82, 76, 80 on old monitor which seems to be too much on the LCD).

Anyway it is eye strain doing all of that and my eyeballs did adjust. It will take some time though and using it, which won't be too pleasant during that time. No glare though on the LCD which to me is really nice.

I don't love it, but the widescreen LCD monitor works. And it is bigger than my 17" CRT monitor I was using since the 19" went haywire some years ago. Well, back to something else on the computer.
