By ronpaul4freedom.com | January 22, 2008
I spoke with the field director for LA and he said that they are still counting and will have results posted on GOP website in the morning. He did say that in Natchitoches Ron Paul won 11 of the 15 Delegates. He also said that there was a really poor showing of people, and that there was only less than 100 people at some sites. We won?t know until tomorrow, but it looks very positive for Ron Paul.

Some people really have no idea, if Huckabee pulls out, and it's Romney, McCain & Paul at the finals.
Who do you think the fundy christian delegates that Huckabee brought through, will vote for? Why Ron Paul of course! |

You are believing the garbage that the lamestream is handing out.
Just a few days ago they were saying it was a wide open race and even gave Fred a shot. Well Fred is gone and we are whipping on the Ghoul. Ron Paul not only has a shot, but I believe it is likely. Namaste

The Democrats and the Republicans both have similar but different processes for their nominating convention. Both are governed by their executive boards and have nothing to do with the constitution or the federal and state governments. The nominating process is a function of the party - the only reason why candidates go through this process is because every state has laws on the books that state if a party receives a certain percentage of the previous gubernatorial or presidential election then that party gets to place their nominee on the ballot without doing much work. If you aren't a "blessed" party nominee, then you have to take out petitions and get enormous amounts of signatures in most cases.
As for Congressman Paul (Note to those calling him Dr. Paul - proper etiquette is to call him by the title of his highest office held, hence why we address former Presidents by President XXX or former Senators by Senator XXX - but I digress) and the Republican Primary he can't get the nomination by attrition. This is one way the Democrat and Republican conventions are very similar:
If a candidate for Presidential Nominee receives more than 50% of the delegates by the time of the convention then by rule, that candidate is the nominee and at that point the convention is just a formality. However, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the delegates then the convention becomes extremely important as after the first official vote the convention will begin subsequent votes until a candidate has 50%+ of the delegates voting for them.
Delegates sign contracts with there state parties stating that they desire to be a delegate for a certain candidate and then the state party sends delegates according to how they awarded delegates in their caucus/primary . Only after the first vote can delegates stray from their contractually bound candidate and then it becomes a race of which two leading candidates can convince the other candidates and their delegates to support them. Delegates are usually the party faithful and will be extremely supportive of whomever they are there for, during subsequent rounds if a candidate asks for his delegates to support a different candidate on subsequent votes, they typically do.
Currently Cong. Paul has 6 delegates that will be going to the GOP Convention. Romney is in the lead with 72 delegates with McCain and Huckabee having 38 and 29 respectively. When Thompson does pull out it will only be 8 delegates and won't make that much of a difference. The real coup would be if Huckabee was forced to step down due to financial problems. Huckabee and his supporters would be much more likely to support McCain than Romney as the Evangelicals still have issues with the fact that Romney is Mormon.
You can keep track of the delegate count on CNN here: [link to www.cnn.com]
The interesting thing about this primary season is how fractured the Republican party is. While the Dems still don't have a definitive frontrunner, at least it is narrowed down to three (Edwards has 52 delegates right now and if he stays through a bit longer who he supports could decide the nominee). |

 | | Re: THOMPSON QUIT, WILL GUILIANI BE NEXT? | Quote | The previous post was mine, it logged me out for some reason. Plus I also find it interesting that Cong. Paul still hasn't been able to widen his base beyond his current grass roots. If he doesn't start using some of that money for advertising and media blitzes then he's never going to have a chance to even be a factor in who gets the nomination little alone their ultimate Presidential Campaign. |
