The California Highway Patrol Vs the USMC F/A-18 Hornet.
Two California HighwayPatrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, North of MCAS Miramar. One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching near the crest of a hill.

The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and turned off.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked onto a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location.

Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander.

Back came a reply in true USMC style:

Thank you for the message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air to ground missile
aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed.

Thank you for your concerns.

I heard on the news that both cops got out of their car and shot their tasers at the Hornet as it passed over causing their hostile radar to be destroyed.
And then they said that the pilot opened the canapy and yelled "Don't taser me bro".

"Don't mess with me 'cause I'm a Marine!
A big bad motherfucker with M- a..a...a F-18!"

I like that. Would of liked it better if the Devil Dog kicked it into burner and broke mach over the cruiser.

Is it true? Don't know...but, many many moons ago, the USAF wanted to find out why we didn't fair as well as we should in air combat in Vietnam. They started a war game called Red Baron. They had the F-15's go up against F-5's pretending to be Soviet planes. Since we believed the Soviets didn't have too much hi tech, the F-5's RHAW system(radar homing and warning) was deactivated.

Well, the F-5s did a very good job of out hunting the higher tech fighters. They sniffed out the F-15's not with a RHAW system, but with a radar detector from Radio Shack.

After the California Highway Patrol incountered this fly over by the F/A -18 Hornet, they went right straight to the auto manintenance department and told the service tech that they had a mess.
Apon seeing the patrol car, the service tech went to his supervisor and complained. The supervisor followed the tech back to the patrol car and shown the supervisor the situation.
After looking and smelling the mess, the supervisor stated to the tech, " Well that is why they used to call it THE PATTY WAGON".

Clearly bullshit. The freeway is at a 90 degree angle to the runway, and the planes DON'T land at 300mph anyway.

The Handheld Radar vs F-18 is a hoax,

I dont believe any police would have a hand-held "radar" it is a very obvious OH&S issue, dealing with microwave transmitters.

Hand-held Laser guns are optical, and do not using microwave transmissions.

Laser guns have to be aimed precisely at the object that you
want to check, so it would be very obvious what they would be aiming at, plus it has to travelling towards you, or away
to it can measure the doppler effect.

Therefore, the plane's radar jammer wont detect or jam a hand-held optical laser.

Besides, a newspaper in England ran the same story, just changing the names/places.

So, Yes, it is a funny story.

OK, if you've seen the photos with the piece, the CHP officer clearly isn't a CHP officer (he is dressed in blue, CHP wears khaki).

The Marines do not perform "Low altitude exercises" close to I-15 because of the risks.

US Warplanes do not carry LIVE missiles on low altitude (or high) exercises unless in a specific remote area for test purposes.

The air story equivalent to the ship's caption refusing to change course coming upon another ship light, feeling that his ship had right-of-way, Captain radioed to the other ship light demanding they change course, eventually being told that the other light is the lighthouse on the rocks at a point on land.
