School staff "Egyptian Gods" to determine students fate in afterlife...

From Elmira Star-Gazette, Monday,January 14th, 2008. Page 2c, School Notes.

Students to 'visit' Egypt for a day

Sixth-graders at Horseheads Intermediate School will spend the day in Egypt on Jan. 25.

"Egypt Day" will run from about 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

The students, many dressed in Egytipan garb, will be immersed in the ancient civilization to celebrate their study of Egypt. They'll rotate from room to room to visit the various stations, which include Catacombs, a feast, games, art, trivia and even a gift shop, where they will use the tokens they receive in the art and game rooms to purchase Egyptian items made by students.

The Catacombs will feature Principal Bobbi Brock and teacher Marty Strong as ancient Egyptian gods. Each student has made a sarcophagus-a container made of stone, in which the Egyptians put mummified bodies-in which they placed mummified fruit. They will present this container to the gods and tell them what kind of life they have led. The gods will then tell them if they'll go on to the afterlife.

This is the in print article. As our paper only "archives" seven days for free, I could(read
not paying some freakishly large amount of money for a four paragraph story) not link to the original, but here is the link to an abbreviated copy of the story.

Second story on the page at time of post.

Here's my thing. Although I think Egyptian history is pretty cool, this is a great way to pique student interest, and I'm pretty sure that the "gods" won't turn any student away, should there be someone telling someone elses kids whether or not they will go on to the afterlife? And what if this was an immersion into the ideas/culture of Scientology,Christianity,Islam,or any other? I also know that parents should be involved in their childrens education and know what is going on at
school, but that whole afterlife thing still bothers me.
In any given situation, you'll either like the outcome, or you won't.

I sure would have loved that when I was a kid. I was nuts about Ancient Egypt. Did any of you ever read the young adult book "The Egypt Game" by Zilpha Keatley Snyder? I sure liked her books, and that was the best one.

Kids in school these days are being taught about every other religion BUT Christianity.

The teaching of Christianity will draw attention, and protest..... but not the teaching about cults and other religious sects.

Here...in the U.S.

Apparently the word god in school is not offensive if a teacher dressed in Egyptian garb is portraying one.
