How many people here don't watch T.V.!
Based on the "am I the only person who does not have cable T.V." post, I am now curious.

How many don't own a T.V. or do, and it works as an end-table.

If you don't, why don't you?

I won't make fun, I am just curious, do you miss it, or has the Net taken over.

Re: How many people here don't watch T.V.!
We don't have a TV. We just came back from a trip, and my mother-in-law had taken it upon herself to buy us one whilst we were away, since of course, everyone has to have one as far as she is concerned. I explained to her that the reason we do not have one is because we do not want one, not because we can't afford one, and sorry but we wouldn't be accepting it.
I just can't stand the "energy" of the TV. It's horrible.
I don't miss it at all, in fact it is a relief.
I love to cycle, cook, surf, work and play - who needs a TV?

Haven't been hooked up to cable for ten years, although I have a TV monitor for seeing DVDs occasionally.

I discovered I couldn't carry on a conversation while a teevee was in operation in the room, so I realized just how hypnotic it was and got rid of it.

I never watch TV....when Im sleeping. Actaully, I consider the internet to BE the same as TV + playstation....it works the same...music, documentaries, films, news videos etc. So given those people without a TV....if they own a computer, they cant really say they dont view one...its just formatted a little differently.

I have 4 shows that I watch, and that's the only time I ever watch TV.

I watch "The Shield", "Dexter", "Heroes", and "Supernatural". The rest of the time I'm surfing the net.

No cable. No digital satellite. There are a few shows I like, but not many. I watch network news to laugh at today's load of stories that aren't true, and truth not being told.
The flashing light effects really bothers me, the shaky camera technique looks like home videos, and for some reason the sound quality changed recently and bothers my ears, aggravates me.

Only watch a few channels--Discovery Channels, Speed Channel, ESPN (Barrett-Jackson Auction), Boomerang (for old episodes of Mightor, Space Ghost, and Herculoids), but am forced to watch Soap Channel when the wife gets ready for bed.

Area Man Constantly Mentioning He Doesn't Own A Television

CHAPEL HILL, NC–Area resident Jonathan Green does not own a television, a fact he repeatedly points out to friends, family, and coworkers–as well as to his mailman, neighborhood convenience-store clerks, and the man who cleans the hallways in his apartment building.

"I, personally, would rather spend my time doing something useful than watch television," Green told a random woman Monday at the Suds 'N' Duds Laundromat, noticing the establishment's wall-mounted TV. "I don't even own one."

According to Melinda Elkins, a coworker of Green's at The Frame Job, a Chapel Hill picture-frame shop, Green steers the conversation toward television whenever possible, just so he can mention not owning one.

"A few days ago, [store manager] Annette [Haig] was saying her new contacts were bothering her," Elkins said. "The second she said that, I knew Jonathan would pounce. He was like, 'I didn't know you had contacts, Annette. Are your eyes bad? That a shame. I'm really lucky to have almost perfect vision. I'm guessing it's because I don't watch TV. In fact, I don't even own one."

According to Elkins, "idiot box" is Green's favorite derogatory term for television.

"He uses that one a lot," she said. "But he's got other ones, too, like 'boob tube' and 'electronic babysitter.'"

Elkins said Green always makes sure to read the copies of Entertainment Weekly and People lying around the shop's break room, "just so he can point out all the stars and shows he's never heard of."

"Last week, in one of the magazines, there was a picture of Calista Flockhart," Elkins said, "and Jonathan announced, 'I have absolutely no idea who this woman is. Calista who? Am I supposed to have heard of her? I'm sorry, but I haven't.'"

Tony Gerela, who lives in the apartment directly below Green's and occasionally chats with the 37-year-old by the mailboxes, is well aware of his neighbor's disdain for television.

"About a week after I met him, we were talking, and I made some kind of Simpsons reference," Gerela said. "He asked me what I was talking about, and when I told him it was from a TV show, he just went off, saying how the last show he watched was some episode of Cheers, and even then, he could only watch for about two minutes before having to shut it off because it insulted his intelligence so terribly."

Added Gerela: "Once, I made the mistake of saying I saw something on the news, and he started in with, 'Saw the news? I don't know about you, but I read the news."

Green has lived without television since 1989, when his then-girlfriend moved out and took her set with her.

"When Claudia went, the TV went with her," Green said. "But instead of just going out and buying another one–which I certainly could have afforded, that wasn't the issue–I decided to stand up to the glass teat."

"I'm not an elitist," Green said. "It's just that I'd much rather sculpt or write in my journal or read Proust than sit there passively staring at some phosphorescent screen."

"If I need a fix of passive audio-visual stimulation, I'll go to catch a Bergman or Truffaut film down at the university," Green said. "I certainly wouldn't waste my time watching the so-called Learning Channel or, God forbid, any of the mind sewage the major networks pump out."

Continued Green: "People don't realize just how much time their TV-watching habit–or, shall I say, addiction–eats up. Four hours of television a day, over the course of a month, adds up to 120 hours. That's five entire days! Why not spend that time living your own life, instead of watching fictional people live theirs? I can't begin to tell you how happy I am not to own a television."

Re: How many people here don't watch T.V.!
The last time I watched I was appalled at the overt force feeding of expected and acceptable social conduct; women are always smarter than men, children are smarter than the parents, I must have room for 10,000 songs in my MPS (1,000 is soooo last year), tits, ass, more tits, more ass. White teeth. Perfect hair. Obsessive approach to home cleanliness. Big screen for the big game. On and on and on. Pathetic. I avoid it like the plague now. But there is a lot of horrifying crap just waiting around the corner on the internet too. Might get rid of my computer pretty soon as well. "If you're right eye causes you to stumble..." Peace.

There is no law that requires you to watch TV.

The last thing I remember watching on my 5 inch green screen Cathrode Ray Tube was 9-11, and something about asking my doctor if this drug is right for me... I now use it for as a security monitor for monitoring the outside parameter with my night vision camera.

I can get 2 local channels, but I'd only tune those in during a weather emergency or disaster,

Re: How many people here don't watch T.V.!
I saw a documentary recently which delved into the origins of the cathode ray tube. The technology involves electrons. Electricity is commonly cited as a means by which evil spirits travel and manifest themselves. According to this documentary (The Antichrist Conspiracy), the very first image ever projected from a cathode ray tube was a skull and crossbones.

There's this guy Benjamin Creme who claims to be the herald of our coming savior (Maitreya). Creme alleges that Maitreya will reveal himself to the world by means of a global manifestation of his divine presence. He will appear to men as a man. To women, as a woman. And he will address each of us in our own language. Satanic stuff to be sure. I suspect (if it even happens) he will use television screens and computer monitors.

I quit watching TV in 1980. I was heading that way and the book "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television" by Gerry Mander solidified my decision.

I do own a small TV with a built-in VCR, but it's not attached to an antenna so I don't get any channels even if I wanted to. I use it for the occasional instructional tape or home-study/how-to courses.

It feels good not being part of the herd.

Re: How many people here don't watch T.V.!
I bought a 53" HDTV last year and barely watch it.

I got it for my family and friends and if anything, I'll occasionally watch something on HD (because of the clarity).

Outside of that, I only use it for Xbox360, Wii or a good movie with surround sound (of course).

Since giving up tv, I have SO much more time to do what I want, I've lost weight, stopped eating in front of it and well... just been enjoying life!
