A Lady Worth Knowing - A Story Worth Hearing
I stumbled upon this article while surfing the web today.

It's an interseting yet, heartbreaking story of the life of a slave in the south.

As a southerner myself, I fully understand and appreciate the antebellum South. I also realize the "War-Between-the-States" was more about state sovereignty than slavery but, the fact is, slavery did exist and to those poor souls who had to endure that burdened lifestyle, living was a nightmare!

This is the story of one of those slaves. Her life is worth knowing. Can you imagine being born into slavery, living a life of slavery and dying with the shackles still on?

If nothing else, such a life, lived, is a bold testimony of the beauty of the enduring human spirit! Take a moment with Mary Reynolds-it'll be time well spent.

It's written in the way slaves spoke/thought in those days so, bear with it. Remember, when reading or looking back in history that to appreciate the story being told, it is neccessary to think in terms of that era's perspective (in lieu of present day view.)

This was one of many oral histories taken down by WCA workers in the 1930's of the survivors of slavery. The writers made efforts to record the stories in the same way that the speakers told it so that their "voices" would conitnue to go on for years to come.

I remember this woman's story. It is one of many.
I advise you all to check out all of the stories.

the story is just too perfect. it is a contruction, character development, plot, storyline, moral etc. even if it was once partly this women's oral story it has sice been reworked by a marxist ghostwriter.

Slavery never existed in the US - it is laughable to even think of the logistics of bringing that many people here on the ships they had at the time! - it is nothing but a communist/negro plot to make us feel guilty.

The slave trade is alive and well in Britain today - guess who is doing it - guess under who's auspices it has been 'tolerated'

In 1833, after a vigorous and prolonged campaign, Parliament abolished all forms of slavery within the British empire. More than 150 years later, slavery has made an insidious comeback inside Britain itself.
# Children for sale: UK's new slave trade

The revelation that thousands of women and children have been trafficked to this country and sold as slaves is profoundly shocking - and yet to judge by the public's reaction so far, we have mostly managed to avoid being shocked by it.

Perhaps David Harrison's dispatch from Africa, in which he describes posing as a businessman and finding couples willing to sell him their children, will begin to change that. People in Britain need to wake up to the horror of what is taking place here, perhaps in a house a few yards from where they live: children as young as seven being kept in abysmal conditions, worked for 19 hours a day and beaten continuously; women sold into sex slavery, forced to service dozens of men a day and beaten viciously if they complain.

That these women and children are not British citizens, but have been brought here in defiance of our law, hardly matters. They are people, and as such, are entitled to be freed from the slavery into which their brutal and repulsive traffickers have condemned them. If the Government's commitment to human rights means anything, it must do everything in its power to secure that freedom.

Poverty, desperation and ignorance make it possible for slavery to flourish. While the Government cannot abolish those evils, it can and must do much more to bring to justice the criminals who buy and sell women and children.

One of our first duties as human beings is to ensure that our government takes whatever steps are necessary to end this horrible practice.

Weeping as he apologises for the slave trade!

For crying out loud, why?Ken Livingstone yesterday marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade with an emotional and tearful ceremonial apology on behalf of the capital city and its institutions. The London mayor wept as he told a commemorative service of the cruelties inflicted on the millions transported from Africa and the legacy that confronts them today. Before an audience of politicians, writers and dignitaries, he twice paused during his address. As he voiced the apology, the US civil rights leader the Rev Jesse Jackson walked over and placed his arm around the mayor. Mr Livingstone completed the long awaited statement, dabbing tears from his eyes, his voice shaky. Before leaving office Tony Blair expressed "regret" for Britain's involvement in the slave trade,...

In our corrupt society it's hard to believe anything at face-value so, I understand where you're coming from. And, yes-the story has excellent form/content-arrangement but, what you have to realize is that in years past people were actually educated in how to "correctly" organize and write articles/essays etc. Obviously, that's not the case today. Our present institutions are instructed to dumb-down the information-to make it easy. So, quite naturally, the writing style/organization of yeateryear will certainly feel "contrived" but, I can assure you the articles are genuine-just of a bygone era when the population were far more advanced in the skills of "proper" communication.

On a side note, my cousin was recently penalized for writing sentences with more than 8 words! Not only that but, after he questioned the merit of such instructions, he was dismissed and told that he should be happy because, he wouldn't have to sweat the assignment!

My young cousin is brilliant but, enjoys his studies and takes pride in his work. He is one of those rare intellectuals equally able from both right & left brain. Needless to say, he was upset from all of this. Hopefully, he will not let it discourage him too much.

It's a shame that as society enters the information/technology age that we the people (as a whole) are so ill prepared. If America falls it will certainly be from within as the rich and powerful are greedy-only interested in themselves and the here and now.

Sorry for the ramble but, I just wanted to address the issue concerning the validity-it's real, we're just too damn stupid to appreciate the beauty of proper writing (not aimed at the poster but, us as a whole in America.)

I worked in the Smithsonian museum of American History for a while, and they have a lot of these type of stories - recorded directly from the mouths of former slaves onto these old cylindrical record-type devices. To hear about the lives of people from times long before your own, in their own words, gives real insight to the human condition - an important thing we seem to be missing today in the world of 24-hour new cycle, scandal of the moment world.

Thanks, Dismas - that was a good read. Kudos to Dumas, too -- I agree that too many people are unaware of these histories.
