Members of a stunned and heartbroken community wrapped their collective hearts around a grieving Dumont family Sunday while trying to wrap their minds around the sudden death of a 14-year-old boy who collapsed while playing basketball.

Aaron Vasquez, who hoped to someday become a major league baseball player or coach, had finished practicing with his recreational league team on Saturday when he decided to stick around Grant Elementary School to play ball with his younger brother, other parents said.

A short time later he collapsed, they said.

NEWBERRY, Mich. (WLUC) - A former Army officer and Upper Michigan native who reported in 2005 that military prisoners in the Middle East were being beaten and abused by U.S. soldiers has died.

Major Ian Fishback of Newberry, Michigan, died suddenly Nov. 19, according to his obituary from the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry. He was 42. No cause of death was listed.

Fishback’s family says he died in an adult foster care facility in Michigan, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Fishback wrote about the abuses in a letter to top aides of Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John W. Warner of Virginia, according to the newspaper.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Funeral arrangements are set for the longtime Rock Co. Sheriff’s Office deputy who died unexpectedly last week.

Deputy Sheriff Bradley Kaderly passed away last Thursday. The sheriff’s office did not indicate how he died, only noting that it happened while he was off-duty and saying that his death was “untimely and unexpected.”

SUNSET HILLS, Mo. — Sunset Hills police officer Christy Meier died suddenly Friday morning after working an overnight shift at the department. She was 47.

“It was a complete shock,” Sunset Hills Police Chief Stephen Dodge said.

LA VERGNE, TN (WSMV) – The city of La Vergne will pay its respects to a veteran police officer who died suddenly on Friday.

Detective Lieutenant Stolinsky passed away unexpectedly last Friday while on duty. The La Vergne Police department said it was a medical incident.

A 12-year-old student from Chartiers Valley School District died Wednesday after collapsing at basketball practice, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jayson Kidd, of Bridgeville, collapsed during warm-ups at about 5 p.m. and was taken to a local hospital where he died. Kidd was a student at the district’s middle school.


“We never expected anything like this to happen to our family,” Kidd wrote. “Jayson’s heart stopped during basketball practice and they could not bring him back.”

(ABC 6 News) - Austin City Council member Oballa Oballa announced the death of Chol Opiew on his social media writing, 'Chol is a long time Austin resident and great leader in Sudanese and Austin community at large.'

The post states Chol went back home to Ethiopia a few months ago to visit his family when he died unexpectedly.

Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer is remembered as an exceptional leader who deeply cared for the community he served.

“We all lost a very good leader and good friend. He was the glue that kept the collaborations in the county going,” Chief Deputy Scott Anger said during a Wednesday afternoon media briefing at the sheriff’s office in Xenia.

Fischer, 65, died suddenly Tuesday evening while at a Buckeye State Sheriffs Association convention in Sandusky.

ELSMERE, Ky. (WXIX) - A Northern Kentucky elementary school is mourning the unexpected death of a teacher.

Second-grade teacher Carrie Williams died late Tuesday, St. Henry Catholic School wrote on Facebook.

The school did not say how she died, but her death was unexpected, the school wrote.

According to school, Williams and her husband recently had a child.

LORAIN — A seventh-grade student died unexpectedly Thursday.

Justin Razo, 13, was a student at General Johnnie Wilson Middle School, according to a district news release and GoFundMe set up by his family.

A cause of death is not known, but he was taken from school via ambulance Wednesday, according to the district.
