WARNING!! NEW STOP SMOKING DRUG Chantix May Pose Psychiatric Risks,,reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior
WASHINGTON — Government regulators said Friday the connection between Pfizer's anti-smoking drug Chantix and serious psychiatric problems is "increasingly likely."

The Food and Drug Administration said it has received reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior in connection with the drug. In November, the agency began investigating reports of depression, agitation and suicidal behavior among patients taking the popular twice-daily pill.

The agency's announcement comes two weeks after Pfizer added stronger warnings to the drug. In doing so, the company stressed that a direct link between Chantix and the reported psychiatric problems has not been established, but could not be ruled out.

Pfizer suggested that since nicotine withdrawal alone can cause mood swings and agitation, it may be impossible to determine if Chantix aggravates those behaviors.

But FDA said it found evidence of Chantix patients who experienced psychiatric problems even though they were still smoking.

"There are a number of compelling cases that look like they are the result of exposure to the drug itself and not other causes," said Bob Rappaport, a director at FDA's drug evaluation center. Some patients experienced the same psychiatric problems after they stopped using Chantix, he said, suggesting a negative reaction to withdrawal.

In a public advisory released Friday, FDA said patients taking Chantix should tell their doctor about any history of mental illness. Patients and family members should watch for any changes in mood and behavior.

"Chantix may cause worsening of current psychiatric illness even if it is currently under control," reads the statement. "It may also cause an old psychiatric illness to reoccur."

FDA noted that patients with psychiatric problems were not included in the original studies used to test Chantix's safety.

Approved in May 2006, Chantix, already prescribed 4 million times in the U.S., has been one of the few bright spots on Pfizer's balance sheet. For full-year 2007, the drug had sales of $883 million, helping offset lower sales of older drugs, such as the antidepressant Zoloft, which face generic competition.

The tablets work by binding to nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing the symptoms of withdrawal.

GlaxoSmithKline makes Zyban, the only other non-nicotine, anti-smoking drug for sale in the U.S. Part of the antidepressant drug class, Zyban includes warnings about increased suicidal behavior.

Shares of Pfizer Inc. rose 23 cents to close at $23.59 Friday.

Re: WARNING!! NEW STOP SMOKING DRUG Chantix May Pose Psychiatric Risks,,reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior
Chantix, an anti-smoking medication, continues to be touted as a “wonder drug” by its maker, Pfizer, Inc., despite the fact that it has been linked to 63 deaths and thousands of reports of psychiatric symptoms in the Unites States and Great Britain in the past year. Yet even though the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning about serious Chantix side effects, the dangerous medication is still being aggressively marketed with a campaign that features slickly produced TV commercials that make no mention of Chantix’s potential problems.

Chantix, approved in 2006, works by blocking nicotine receptors to the brain. Chantix is the first such nicotine receptor partial agonist approved by the FDA. It was heralded as an alternative to other smoking cessation drugs and nicotine replacement therapy. The Chantix label warns of various side effects, including nausea, changes in dreaming, constipation, gas and vomiting. But those warnings are more prominent and easier to find than the fine print on the package insert that warns of the possibility of psychotic and suicidal behavior.

In November, the FDA said that it was beginning a safety review of Chantix after it received reports of 55 suicides and 199 suicidal thoughts possibly linked to Chantix use. The FDA said that its preliminary assessment revealed that many of the cases reflected new-onset of depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks of initiating Chantix treatment. The role of Chantix in these cases is not clear, the FDA said, because smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms and has also been associated with the exacerbation of underlying psychiatric illness. However, not all patients described in these cases had pre-existing psychiatric illness and not all had discontinued smoking. At that time, the FDA recommended that doctors monitor patients taking Chantix for behavior and mood changes.

Similar problems with Chantix have also been reported in Britain, where the drug hit the market a year ago under the name Champix. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, had received 1335 reports of patents suffering serious side effects, including seven deaths — one of which was a suicide — by December 18. Chantix was also linked to 748 cases of psychiatric problems including suicidal thoughts and depression, 819 gastrointestinal disorders and 70 heart disorders.

But smokers encouraged to ask their doctors about Chantix after seeing one of Pfizer’s engaging TV commercials or viewing its Chantix website would not know of the drug’s potential for psychiatric side effects. The side effects section of the Chantix website lists what Pfizer calls the drug’s “most common” side effects – nausea, sleep disturbance (trouble sleeping, changes in dreaming), constipation, gas, and vomiting – but makes no mention of suicide or suicidal thoughts. The website only warns that “These are not all the side effects of Chantix. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. ” But even the site’s section aimed at healthcare professionals makes no mention of suicide, suicidal thoughts or psychiatric side effects.

The FDA is expected to take several months to complete its Chantix safety review. While that review is ongoing, many people will continue to use Chantix, possibly unaware of its potential to cause dangerous psychiatric side effects

no one who has a mood disorder needs to take a drug that produces strong adverse psychological affects... especially when it's not entirely necessary to take it in the first place.

you can ask any psychiatrist about that and they'll tell you.

26 year smoker.
I've been on Chantix for 2 weeks and I've gone from a pack to one cigarette a day. I'm so excited! The coolest part is that it's been easy. I actually forget to go outside and smoke- even after I eat! The dreams are amazing; I describe them as "adventures I go on every night".
Mild gas and a bad taste when I do smoke are the only real side effects I've experienced so far. I'm ALL FOR this medicine, it works for me when I've tried so many other things in the past that just didn't.

Re: WARNING!! NEW STOP SMOKING DRUG Chantix May Pose Psychiatric Risks,,reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behavior
Sooner or later, everybody stops smoking.

I'm down to 2-3 cigarettes (not packs) a day. Usually it's after I read GLP.

Alan Watt said an interesting thing about smoking - to the effect that it helps with the chemtrails. He didn't go into detail. I'm wondering if it's because you hack crap up when you smoke; maybe the stuff that's in the chemtrails along with it.

I won't take chemicals of any sort to stop smoking. That's because I enjoy my 2-3 smokes a day. What I don't like is feeling like a criminal doing it. So I hide in the woods.

When I was growing up, everyone smoked. Even the teachers at school had their own smoking lounge. I think smoking is definitely an emotional release; time to think by yourself or you're maxed stressed out. Never drank, though. Losing control of my mind (what's left of it) never appealed to me.

TPTB know that when fuel prices rise among other crises, people will drink and smoke more. Sooooo, what will they do? Raise the price of alcohol and cigarettes of course! They make too much money off of them!

You gotta love the psychology involved.

Take it from someone who knows. This drug is dangerous. I was on it from July to Oct of 2007 and I am suffering major side effects to this date. 06,02,2008 Good luck to anyone who tries it, but I say it isnt worth the risk. My brain is fried.

I quit cold turkey several years ago, but I know that's not for everyone. I know several people who've tried Chantix and aside from gut problems (sometimes pretty severe) I notice that the drug seems to make people really angry. I mean they'll go off in very beligerent ways over any trivial thing. I'm waiting to see reports of the stuff linked to workplace murder or the like.

You won't suffer any psychological impairment from smoking. Matter of fact, it enhances thinking, and that's why so many doctors, scientists, and professors smoke. I've noticed for years that people who smoke are more alert than those who don't.

It has been clinically proven that nicotine boosts the supply of the critical brain chemical acetylcholine, which shortage leads to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

For those who don't smoke, an alternative is nicotinic acid, which raises the production of acetylcholine, which is good for the arteries, too.

Forget the drugs.

Chantix made me want to die too

I'm trying wellbutrin again plus the patch

Smoking with the patch makes me zone!

Target quit date June 24

Hopefully I'll beat that.

I can't afford cigs, patches, and wellbutrin!
