Rash of Marijuana Misinformation Stories lately: "Smoking Pot Rots Your Gums," "Cannabis Bigger Cancer Risk Than Cigarettes," and
[link to www.alternet.org]

You've seen these stories posted here in the last few days.

Quote:
"Recent weeks have seen a rash of new studies of marijuana hitting the mass media, generating scary headlines like "Smoking Pot Rots Your Gums," "Cannabis Bigger Cancer Risk Than Cigarettes," and "Pot Withdrawal Similar to Quitting Cigarettes. Most of this coverage can be boiled down to a fairly simple equation:

Flawed science + uncritical reporting = misinformation.

Mercifully, the U.S. mass media were so distracted by Super Tuesday, Heath Ledger's autopsy and the latest Britney Spears trauma that reports of these studies didn't get as much play as they might have. That's good, because the research had significant gaps, and the reporting ranged from slapdash to flat wretched."

None of these stories justify the legalization of crime.

Crime is a principle, NOT a legislated thing. You cannot legitimately legislate crime out of thin air.

The principle of crime is that there is an injured party and a responsible party for the injury. Robbers/Thieves/Burglars violate the property of the injured party. Assaulters violate the body. Rapists violate the body. Vandals/Graffiti violate property. Insider Traders violate property. Embezzlement violate property.

The power granted to the justice system to violate the body and property of the responsible party can only legitimately come from the power granted to it by the injured party.

This is to prevent citizens from taking matters into their own hands and making things worse.

If the responsible party does NOT want to have their body and property violated, they should *NOT* have initiated the violation of another. Why complain about your being violated, when you had no moral compunction about violating the body and property of another?

When there is no injured party and no responsible party, THERE IS NO CRIME.

When you violate the body and property of a citizen that has not violated another, then this violation in itself IS the crime.

Therefore, the drug war against nonviolent people [I am not including the violent ones here, mind you] IS in itself criminal.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, so you MUST keep criminal law within the sphere of having its power derived from the injured party, and NOT something for any legislative body to determine.

If you disagree with that, then do you agree that it is a good idea for Mississippi to make into law the bill that would make serving obese people in restaurants a crime? "The law says it is illegal to serve them, therefore it is definitely a CRIME to serve them!". blink

For the rest of the laws we need to keep ourselves functioning as a civilization, you use CIVIL laws. This is where you can prevent tobacco/cannabis smoke from harming the air quality of people in public spaces, but without having the power to railroad what people do in the privacy of their own homes [as long as that does not include the violation of another, such as imprisoning someone in your home against their will for example].

If a person under the influence of drugs leads to the death of another and blames it on, "I was too drugged out! I'm not responsible!" then it would be perfectly legitimate for the sentence to be that this person CAN NO LONGER LEGALLY POSSESS OR USE THAT DRUG FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE! We can't bring a dead person back to life, so it would be legitimate for them to lose their right for life as well.

Anyone thinking they will use their legal status to give drugs to this person who has lost their lifetime right will ALSO lose their right for the rest of their life when caught! This is how you do it-- you MUST STICK TO PRINCIPLE.

How odd that doing a search for the words in the Subject heading isn't bringing this thread up-- had to use history in my browser to find it.

Is it that mods have to clear each thread or it has to be around longer than a day or ?
