Re: HYDROPONICS -- A VITAL SURVIVAL SKILL FOR THE FUTUREQuote

the benefits of tilapia in this type of system are staggering.

1. filter feeder / vegetarian / detritovore - cuts down on feeding costs, less expensive protein to feed.
2. easy to breed - and prolific
3. fast growers - edible in 6-9 months
4. can handle high fish concs.
5. can handle high nitrates etc in water.

and they actually taste good. we have been eating them weekly for a while now on the BBQ, very nice.

i have read that the quality of oxygen is depleting, and that it could get much worse, so i thought if it could compliment the system, and help you ,,, hey what the heck?

especially if you had to remain in a closed enviroment for extended periods
 Quoting: malu

yeah, think mission to mars with a tub full of fish and some plants growing out of it.

i have not done any research on how much oxygen is regenerated by photosynthesis and how to capture it, but it is something i should look into as well.

That is really cool, thanks for sharing. I see fish as being very important in the future, especially for the "West" who does not consume very much of it.

Re: HYDROPONICS -- A VITAL SURVIVAL SKILL FOR THE FUTUREQuote

i have been doing research on this for about a year now and have a space that i will be trying out in within 2 to 3 months.

we are going to start with 2 harems of fish and run hydroponics on that.

we will expand as the fish breed and see what happens.

i have experience with large closed systems, tropical fw plant growing and tropical fish breeding, so this is a synergy of a bunch of life skills.

a lot to do on top of a day job, but this is the important stuff IMHO.

Vegetable growth would be one of my hydroponic interest.

what? can you grow animals on hydroponics?

well fish and water do mix :)
 Quoting: malu

Good point, but unfortunately, incorrect.
Growing fish would be called aquaculture (or mariculture if it's on an enclosed section on the ocean)

Hydroponics are (and let me use some dictionary quotes so no one says I'm making it up):

# Growing plants without soil by providing nutrients in a solution instead.
[link to iss.cet.edu]

# aquicultural: of or relating to aquiculture; "aquacultural methods"; "hydroponic lettuce"
[link to wordnet.princeton.edu]

# Hydroponics is crop production with mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil containing silt and clay. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite, gravel or rockwool. A variety of techniques exist.

I believe hydroponics is an indespensible technique, and have researched it myself. I have also designed my own system. I have two books, in [.pdf] format, that I have uploaded to megaupload.com, and I am posting the links to them for you. This should give you enough research materials to get you started. Both books cover the technique in depth, and you should not need any further research material if you have these two books. I would suggest to anybody that wants to learn, download these books.

Malu has a wonderful idea "run a bed/breakfast/eco tourism project".

I'm wondering how small a project can be interesting to the bed/breakfast crowd.

Any ideas?

i was thinking of that as a sideline, not really the draw, but to some it would be worth going to see

but, you could have a menu that would draw the crowd, if you could do some freshwater crawfish, you could do a fish boil, with baby green salads, and veggies,, hmmmm

i like to think of things in a complete circle,, ya know?

There is a place in Muscle Shoals, Alabama that is doing this very thing, I think on TVA property. Do not remember the web site or name, but one can go on the proberty and observe.

Please assist with menu ideas for a very small bed & breakfast hydroponic garden project.

Also, what would you expect to see, or be shown or demonstrated during your stay?

Two guest bedrooms so that each session (weekend) might include 3-4 persons.

Breakfast

Blueberry pancakes
Eggs, grits

Lunch

Can only remember reading an article about it, but would like to visit it for myself and plan to do so perhaps this summer. Believe they are trying to grow anything and everything. This is a husband and wife team I believe. Will try to find out more and post about it. Maybe it is even a TVA run facility, who knows. TVA is is the area, chemical plants, dams, and close to the Tennessee River.

Re: HYDROPONICS -- A VITAL SURVIVAL SKILL FOR THE FUTUREQuote

I do have some stuff written up an am collecting local funding at this time.

I am in the Vancouver BC area.

We plan on doing this year round and using as many bio and environmental shortcuts as possible. I already mentioned duckweed, but geo-thermal and solar are also options we are looking at.

For the small scale pilot we are looking at just heating a small garage to run as proof of concept.

I have 20 years of fish tank and tropical plant experience, and have worked at a major public aquarium, so I am also familiar with closed systems.

In this day and age localized food production is the key IMHO, I saw a story on TV where they catch salmon in Alaska, ship them to China for processing, then to NFL for secondary processing and then back to the west coast for sale. It made me sick.

There is a 5 million dollar a year market in Vancouver for tilapia alone, with only 10 percent supplied locally, and organic veggies and herbs are always in high demand. I was also thinking of growing orchids and flowers, although that would be secondary.

The worst thing that happens is that my friends and I have fresh fish and veggies.

Re: HYDROPONICS -- A VITAL SURVIVAL SKILL FOR THE FUTUREQuote

Up around Alamosa Colorado there is a guy who started farming Tilapia using geothermal waters. You have to understand the elevation there is well over a mile high and sits in a valley between the San Juans to the west and the Sangre de cristos to the east. These mountain ranges both contain peaks that are up to 14000 feet in elevation. This can be an extremely unforgiving environment.

To deal with some of the waste and dead fish ect.. this guy brought in alligators. They have done very well even laying eggs outside in the summer months. Its a trip to see these 10 foot gators out sunning themselves among the snow and ice....no kidding.

Google gator farm alamosa co, I think they have a website??

Re: HYDROPONICS -- A VITAL SURVIVAL SKILL FOR THE FUTUREQuote

Many people are learning survival skills and the subject of most survival posts centers around guns, gold and bug out bags.

I agree that those are important matters to consider however, they skip a very important, easily learned skill that can produce large quantites of food in a relatively small space even if the soil becomes fucked up - hydroponics.

It is faster, less suceptable to disease, and some have argued more nutricious than soil grown food. It can use 1/20 of the water needed to grow plants in soil and the yeild is phenominal.

For all of you that have shown interest in survival skills, this is a skill you should learn. It can be used for great benifit even if the shit doesn't hit the fan.
 Quoting: Juanwhoknows

Have you ever grown hydroponically? I have.Dirt is much better unless you live in the desert.Hydroponics are a hassle. You need electricity and nutrients to feed the plants with. The water's PH and temperature have to be just right.Unless you're growing lettuce, most plants get topheavy and need support.Hydroponic food production is not a survival skill.
Hydroponics would not be good if the shit hit the fan.Soil is the way to go. Learn to grow a garden in the ground,or in pots.Learn how to compost. That will enrich damaged land.Learn how to fish and jar-up food.Learn how to make candles and harvest honey. And learn how to build an outhouse.
When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.
