Just last week I went to a hydro farm that is open to the public for U pick. I got pesticide free strawberries, spinach, and kale. He also has cukes, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, and much more as well as fresh blueberries to pick in April. He has them set up in rows on poles with each unit holding 20 containers. No bending over and breaking your back or walking in mud in the feilds. The poles also spin so you can reach all fruits, veggies etc. I found it absolutely amazing he had acres of these systems set up outdoors. They were only growing in pearlite and vermiculite with a hydro solution feeding them at intervals during the day. Oh, I forgot to mention, this was in Plant City, Fla. the strawberry capitol of the south. I plan on going back every two weeks to stock up on the veggies.

That looks like a cool place. I think I'll try strawberries. |

The fish run are Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon, the veggies are anything under the sun including a few miniture fruit trees and some banana plants.
This system also feeds 40 acres of grain, 20 acres of fruit trees and a kitchen garden. Besides making heat for the house and all this at 11,000ft in CO. |

Malu told us about you but he really understated it.
Your setup sounds very interesting. Do you have any pics or a website?
Could you describe the mechanism for creating heat for the house?
Thanks! |

First the basics: We live in a 10,000+sqft home, 5 families 22 people total. 99.99% of our food is grown by us and what isn't grown is traded for.
NO PICS and NO WEBSITE. The idea is you can't find us even if you try.
The greenhouse is 3 sides of bermed dirt and rock and is built like a swimming pool filled with gravel and water. So sunlight hit the surface and is redistributed into the greenhouse. There are also pipes run through out the gravel that run from one end to the other. These pipes take the warm air out of the greenhouse and heat the gravel in the floor the gravel pit is about 12ft deep and is also filled with water so heat storage is massive. Then there is another set op pipes thats run from the greenhouse to the house used for heating. So the gravel pit in the greenhouse is the storage and also the plenum and the whole thing runs as a closed loop system.
I hope I described it so you could visualize it, it pretty much looks like a hill that's been dug out with glass on the front and facing south. For stealth the glass was coated with a camo pattern from the same place that buses get there murals over the windows. Light loss is about 7% with this coating but at 100yrds you don't even know it's there.
Does that make sense?
The aquaponics system was based after the one that the New Alchemy Institute designed in the early 70s. |

We started out with wind then built a hydro unit of 50KW recently we have found geothermal on the property which now runs another 50KW unit.
With this I use supplement lighting because we can go weeks without adequate natural light. The supplement lighting is High pressure sodium and Metal Halide on pretty much a 2 to 1 bases. |

Not just the nutes but that's how it's irrigated as well. I also use the solids out of the methane digester's to put on the fields. They include all wastes both human and animal with field waste (hay, stems from wheat etc.) for the carbon component. Yes I have had it checked for pathogens and as long as it's fully digested there is no problem. You CAN'T put the waste from the digester's on the fields if any additional human or animal waste has been added recently.
I use a % of about 70-30 in the digester's (70 carbon 30 nitrogen) the carbon is the grasses and such the nitrogen is the POO.
Your asking the right questions! |

Not to long ago (OK some months) I gave you a way of building a small scale methane digester using a 55 gal barrel and truck inner tubes remember that?
Mine is NOT that small but the same principle.
I also gave you an idea about building a cooler for doctors that was solar powered and used TEC units.
Methane digester: not only heating and water heating how about cooking. Anything natural gas does! Pun intended! |

I DO NOT GROW WEED and yes I've read they do cloning a
lot with weed.
The way I see it they do this to preserve one particular female plant. In veggie gardening I (Myself) don;t want this much restriction. I want some diversity and I'm suprised the dope growers don't want the same but I'm not an expert in that.
Was this started as a thread to grow dope or veggies? IF it's to grow dope I'll back out as profits are not where I'm at and eating is.
Let me know because it seems you have an expert hydroponics dope grower on your hands. All I do is grow food for 22 people every day and know nothing about illegal activities in fact the cops come to the house at least twice a week to shoot. |

I have done cloning with Tomatoes and I still ask myself WHY?
I use a fine paint brush to distribute pollen to selected plants. I like SOME diversity not a lot. I also run 4 bee hives in the greenhouse to get proper pollination. The flowers that have been cross pollinated with a specific plant are bagged. This is how I achieve the desired cross and not contaminate the rest of the crop.
I should mention I use ONLY heirloom seed and the stuff I cross is just for fun not to be used as a standard. Some times the ladies (There are 5) want something different. Who am I not to try?
As far as speed: WHY? Planning is more important but hey I'm an old fart!
The way I see it whether it's dope or veggies it's the quality not the quantity! Do you want mexican dirt weed or GOLD it's up to you. FYI I did say I've never smoked it I just don't now and haven't since 72 and I've never grown it. |

I get LOTS of fruit off of them...
I've found that channel catfish are the best for me, as they take crowding and low oxygen very well, and are not as cold sensitive as the tilapia...
