Fifty Percent Chance Lake Mead Will Be Dry By 2021

Wired

2008-02-13

Last month, we reported about Scripps Oceanographic Institute researchers' work on the impact of climate change on the Western water crisis. Now, the same researchers are back in a smaller scientific journal to answer a simple question posed in the title of their paper: "When Will Lake Mead Go Dry?"

Based on models constructed from the analysis of historical records from the Federal Bureau of Land Reclamation, the researchers, Tim Barnett and David Pierce, say there is a ten percent chance the reservoir will be dry in 2014, and a 50 percent chance no water will be left by 2021.

Lake Mead was created by the Hoover Dam's blockage of the Colorado River. The river is fed by snow pack from Rockies, which has been decreasing. The dam, of course, was one of the prototypical megaengineering efforts of the 20th century and a symbol of how human ingenuity could conquer any obstacle, including supplying water to a city the size of Las Vegas in the middle of the desert.

But the sheer amount of water that natural and manmade climate changes and human usage is drawing out of the Colorado River system is staggering. The researchers estimate that 1 million acre-feet, or 326 trillion gallons, of water are being leached out of the system each year. They say that's enough to supply 8 million people.

Their conclusion is dire:

Today, we are at or beyond the sustainable limit of the Colorado system. The alternative to reasoned solutions to this coming water crisis is a major societal and economic disruption in the desert southwest; something that will affect each of us living in the region.

We've nudged what has been a naturally replenishing system into a downward spiral. While everyone hopes that there is a technological answer to generating fresh water--say, desalination, or wastewater recycling-- those things cost money and energy, and will almost certainly drive up the cost of water.

But take a step back and look at the system, it defies reason to build huge cities in a desert that's getting even dryer. I have no doubt that as the price of water and air conditioning rise in Vegas and Phoenix, the low upfront housing costs and hot sun will start to lose their appeal. I just hope that happens before we permanently break the Colorado River water system.

Somehow I think it has more to do with 50 billion more people moving into the region than it does with global warming .

... well now, I for sure know that it's been gettin' progressively warmer here where I live... and in facto, just this past year our gardening zone here went from 5 to 6. Now I sure don't know if it's really about any overall global warming type thingie per se, but it is for sure a warming cycle.

Re: I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS GLOBAL WARMING BALONEY
Man are co-creators of everything that happens in the cosmos.

If you don't believe that the food chain and eco system is breaking down then you have your head in the sand. Frogs that have lived on planet earth through every earth change for 200 million years died on masse in the rain forests. Bees are dying. Man is arrogant and it is so easy to put the responsibility elsewhere instead of taking responsibility for the co-creation.

You are creators; if you only knew the power of your omnipotence you might have more respect for it and what it co-creates for the cosmos.

Mars Melt Hints at Solar, Not Human, Cause for Warming, Scientist Says

Kate Ravilious
for National Geographic News

February 28, 2007
Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes have a natural—and not a human-induced—cause, according to one scientist's controversial theory.

Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the vast majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. (Get an overview: "Global Warming Fast Facts".)

Mars, too, appears to be enjoying more mild and balmy temperatures.

In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of space research at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars," he said.

Solar Cycles

Abdussamatov believes that changes in the sun's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets.

Mars and Earth, for instance, have experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories.

"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said.

By studying fluctuations in the warmth of the sun, Abdussamatov believes he can see a pattern that fits with the ups and downs in climate we see on Earth and Mars.

Re: I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS GLOBAL WARMING BALONEY

[link to www.sciencedaily.com]
ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2007) — Early
humans developed larger brains as they
adapted to colder climates, according to
University at Albany researchers.

The study, to be published by Jessica Ash, a
graduate student in psychology, and
professor of evolutionary psychology
Gordon G. Gallup Jr. in the spring edition of
Human Nature (Vol. 18, Issue 2, 2007:
Transaction Publishers), suggests that
human cranial capacity as an indicator of
brain size grew dramatically during our
evolution, and that variations in global
temperature as well as progressive shifts
toward global cooling account for as much
as 50 percent of the variation in cranial
capacity. The research utilized several
measures of paleotemperatures and a sample
of 109 fossilized hominid skulls collected
over the past 2 million years.

Gallup and Ash suggest that while our
understanding of brain evolution remains
incomplete, the study provides evidence of
the role of climate and migration away from
the equator as selective forces in promoting
human intelligence, and that the recent trend
toward global warming may be reversing a
trend that led to brain expansion in humans.

The article is a good example of how
dishonest the administration and science
faculty of the University at Albany must
have become. If you can fabricate a theory
as to why the alleged man-made global
warming will harm your non-climate science
field, funding will be made available for
your non-climate science research.

Make love, not CO2!
14 Feb 2007
Brussels, Belgium – It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air, along with lots of carbon dioxide.

WWF is calling on European energy ministers to “make love, not CO2” on February 15 by either voting for deep cuts in carbon emissions or staying in bed for a nice cuddle.

EU energy ministers meeting in Brussels on February 15 have an incredible opportunity to leave a little love-note for the planet. Making sure that 20 to 25 per cent of energy in the EU comes from renewable sources by 2020, rather than caving-in to passionless old-fashioned energy policies, they can make sure that in the future temperatures will rise only in appropriate circumstances.

WWF suggests that any minister planning to vote for anything less than this target should extend their Valentine’s night festivities and stay in bed smooching — leaving the ministers who have enough foresight to protect both Europe and the planet to ensure that the right decision is reached by the Council.

Stephan Singer, Head of WWF’s European Climate and Energy Unit, said: “It’s really quite wonderful that these politicians could change the world by staying in bed and making love. It’s like John Lennon and Yoko Ono all over again. The EU’s largest countries – Germany, UK, France and Italy – have already said that they want a 20 to 30 per cent cut in emissions. This should translate in strong legislation with mandatory targets on renewables. Hopefully, any minister planning to vote for less will be tucked up in bed rather than at the Council meeting.”
